It should definitely make the room visible on the wilderness map even in complete darkness. You can see a fire from a long ways off at night, even if you dont know whats between you and it.

If it would make the room visible on the overland map. Wow . . .that would be cool and at the same time limiting.

Technically, scouts can already avoid cities completely - they can find and make food, can drink wilderness map water without getting poisoned, and can find refreshing herbs.

Why the hell does anybody go to a city? Scouts still have to buy things, train skills and meet people who tend to gather in cities, as well as go inside the cities to defend them if they're part of a tribunal or alliance. It's not like every scout is going to be hanging around by their campfires camoed 24/7. And if I were a scout, and I wanted to get my health/PE back up... I'd go into an Inn (as long as the regen rate is higher), unless I was a high-profile guy who needed to watch his back. In which case, it wouldn't matter what class I was, you'd be hard-pressed to find me sleeping in an Inn anyway! I don't know why this has to be a big deal.

All I see this as is a nice rest-bonus for lowbie groups leveling wherever, and higher groups out in places like the Wasteland. Sure, make it super visible, that makes sense. Take 1% damage for burning your hand if you fail, although even that seems rather silly. Make it require... dare I say it... TINDERBOXES? Or have that make it easier. Whatever. I think it's good to go.

I absolutely love the campfire idea! I've had the same thought myself before. :D

Campfires can only be built in the wilderness, but your chances for success vary depending on wilderness type. Making a campfire in a swamp or snowy wastelands might be tricky, but making one in the desert or a forest would be easy, also make wind and weather a factor. You really have to know your stuff to make a fire on a windy rainy night.

Modest boost to regen? Maybe 1/3rd - 1/2 of the boost an inn gives? Even without the regen boost I'd be happy to see this skill.

Takes some PE, sure, that makes perfect sense. Once again, terrain and weather might affect how much PE it costs you

I REALLY like the idea of having the space with the lit campfire visible on the wilderness map at night. While its lit area echos could be done, something like this:
Code:
You walk north.

Wide Open Plains
You find yourself standing in a wide-open plain.  There
^ppp   aren't any trees growing here, and you can see for miles.  The
p*p    air is fresh, as if it's been blown in from the ocean.  There is
pbb    plenty of vegetation in the form of grass and weeds, but none of
it grows larger than knee high.  It's partly cloudy, freezing,
and calm.
Obvious exits: n e s w nw ne sw se

You see the flicker of flames to the northeast(nearby?).

This would tip you to the fire during the daytime when the space is lit by sunshine. At night it would be obvious, as you see a lit space on your map that wouldn't normally be there.

And after its put out you can have tha ashes and area echos for the smell. Perhaps even the option to put the fire out early: empty barrel campfire

Tinderboxes, yes, either required or just to make the task easier. Especially given conditions, going to rub two sticks together in the rain and make a fire? Probably not. But with a tinderbox, maybe.

Random chance of burning yourself while lighting the fire? I like that idea as well, it would be hilarious to see some poor guy catch fire for a little bit, that could work something like a very short lived magma spray.

Definitly have a time limit on how long it lasts, which varies according to skill/terrain/weather, campfires should be good for 1-8 hours. And of course, they are a source of light at night.

Yes, I want campfires. I don't even care if it gets the regen boost.
Do it do it do it, please?

I really like the idea of being able to build campfires, and I was going to suggest a variation of this. No matter what, in the end I always come back to the argument against myself: Now who is going to bother going to the inn?

It's a valid concern, and I wager the only reason this isn't like ABSOLUTELY 100% YES right now.

My general feeling is that there are players and playergroups whose RP is well-served by a feature such as the one we're discussing here, and that there are others who might prefer to frequent the traditional inns/cities. On the other hand, it seems like we always have an inn or two that's sparsely-patronized as it is, so... can we afford to encourage more people away from these gathering places and still make sure the newbie in one of those lands has a shot at a good experience? I'm honestly not sure.

Move recall points back inside the cities, then inn population won't be as much of an issue.

In fact, just move recall points back inside of cities regardless of the whole campfire thing.

Do people who go to the inns for the regen sit there and RP? No, they're probably leveling or in the middle of PK. They have other things to worry about, and they'll probably be sleeping in between rather than resting to RP if it's that important to them.

People go to inns to RP for one reason, and I'll let you try and guess it from the first part of my sentence. Campfires will not affect it.

Seconded. Moving recall outside of [] was [REDACTED].
