Mithril was always dug out by dwarves. Dwarves made badass armors and weapons out of mithril.
Some of it got in the hands of elves, and some elven armor was crafted from mithril, surpassing the dwarven craftsmen by far. (not that the dwarves would ever admit)
However, one suit of elven chainmail would take 100 years to craft, as each link was seperately crafted into perfection, so you don't exactly mass produce that [REDACTED].

Then there's glowsteel, or silver mithril, that exists on the homeplane of elven deities arborea. Elven celestials, known as eladrin, often pass down glowsteel weapons or armor to the favored of the Seldarine.

Similar to glowsteel we have baatorian greensteel, for those lawful evil :p
