We could also get another echo based on which stat point was lost, to clear up confusion and to let noobies know that they did lose one. I remember when I started playing I maxed STR then 15 levels later I was missing 1 point of it from a level I lost 15 levels ago :-/

Something along the lines of

Your strength decreases!

I know it lacks flavor, but when you train a stat its fairly straight forward as well.

It comes from a random stat, try me, noobs, I've lvled more chars and been cursed more lvls than all of you combined >_<

My guess would be that it comes from the last stat trained. It is definately not random though.

Honestly, it sucks to have to go on an investigative spree just to find out exactly how your own body has changed. But whatever.
