Since I haven't heard anyone even mentioning the damage over time as a concern, this obviously isn't where the spell is supposed to be headed. I'll be toning down the initial burst a bit to compensate.

Actually making the initial burst affected by MP, as all damage spells are, then leaving the DoT unaffected, would be a much better idea.

This way magma will still rape unprepared PCs with 0 enchants, but those that are prepared will still manage to avoid it.

Unless of course it's impossible to do that, separate the affects/saves on initial damage and DoT.

I concur with DA. I havn't been hit by any magma, but what I've seen from others is that it just hurts too much. I wouldn't think that magma being thrown at you would hurt all that much. Now if it was thrown at you and it landed on your arm and stayed there...i think thats where you move from the world of superficial skin damage to bones cracking and burning off.

That's because DoT effects just aren't important in a game where you can readily escape as long as you aren't immobilized. How exactly do you envision the magma cling (DoT) working in practice?

Warlock casts magma spray, it clings to the target, the target flees and then the warlock uses track to chase him down while the DoT kills them?

Not likely to happen that way.

I think a more likely scenario is the warlock casts magma spray, it clings to the target, and the target quaffs a recall potion and makes a mad dash to their local healer and buys enough heals to survive.

The victim then spends ten to fifteen minutes grinding cash and has enough obsidian to buy more heals.

No one mentions the DoT effect because any prepared character engaging in pkill that isn't immobilized will have a way to avoid death due to the periodic damage. And players like Dark-Avenger know that if the spell is changed so that only the DoT effect ignores magical protection, warlocks can be safely ignored again.

Well, I've finally been hit with the new magma. In my opinion it seems a bit overpowered, especially if D wants to move towards longer combat. It seems to me like warlocks just got a new and improved harm.

That really did HURT!
Your concentration has been disrupted!
You howl in agony as the magma clings to your body!

That's the stick. With enough reflex it could be cut down to about 25% straight damage or so, is what it looks like. It took a grand total of two magma sprays and the cling to kill a GM hellion. If this is how it's meant to work, then I'll shut up and take a step back from pk.

Witherwood what race/class/level are you, and was this a GM magma?

I say making sticking abit harder and brutalizing the DoT.

Stick it and forget it. If it sticks to them they are pretty much going to die...maybe not right then...but five seconds later.

Well, the easy solution would be to allow MR to affect Magma again. That would then make that absolutely crappy enchantment worth something again.

Good point, this is quite relevant information to get before getting on a holy wimping crusade.

There should be quite a few people qualified to comment on on the under or overpoweredness of the new magma spray, now... 8)
