I know I've mentioned this idea before, but I think it was some years ago now.

Add an IC reputation command, where players can use x number of characters to describe their public reputation. For example, I see on the who list 'Benjamin whatever, khaghan who hasn't washed his hands in a while', and I go "Wow, that sounds interesting. I wonder what people have to say about him". I type "reputation benjamin", and I see the ten lines of public reputation Benjamin's player has written about himself. It might be something like this.

"Benjamin is the khaghan of the Council of Necromancers, and a strong voice for war in the North. He picks his nose a lot and has recently been seen with a jar of cookies. When asked about them, he is said to reply 'No, you stole the cookie from the coo-coo, kie jar.'"

Or whatever. Obviously this example is a hypothetical, and I'm probably being a bit libellous. Long story short, it lets people read a little bit about what the public might know of a character. Obviously it would have to be policed by the imms for absurdities, but I don't think that would be a terrible burden.

This way, if I have never met a character before, I can read his reputation (which one can assume can be heard from asking various npc townsfolk) and have something to say. I could, in this instance, express interest in our mutual fascination with cookies (or whatever).

I like this idea, and I hope Jardek will not call me any more mean names.

I think 10 lines is a bit long. Details of personal habit, for example, are best experienced rather than simply published.

But yeah, it'd be nice to be able to get a little background about titled people. If I know from bar-gossip that XXX is the Rose of the South, I should be able to find out what that's supposed to mean.

I like.

As a potential added feature, have two blurbs for reputation: the first self-entered, as explained.

For the second, one would go to the astral watchers, pay a substantial fee or do a spiffy quest, and add a rumor about so-and-so. Place a price on someone's head, tell the world that this stupid griffon murders recklessly, etc. For sanity's sake, be limited to one rumor a year or somesuch, because the astral watchers don't want to deal with your drivel too frequently.

Just a thought for kicks and giggles.

I find it stupid writing your own reputation. For example you could see in the who list:

[---]Warrior 1
[---]Warrior 2
[---]Warrior 3

Typing 'reputation warrior 1" you could get this feedback:

'Warrior 1 is the best warrior of Pyrathia, blah blah..."

Then typing "reputation warrior2" you could get:

'Warrior 2 is the best warrior of Pyrathia, blah blah..."

I also find it cooler for someone who is young and doesn't know many things to ask and rp and get different opinions ic than not interacting at all with other players and getting a feedback with a command, which is nothing else than the opinion of the player of the character and not the opinion of the playerbase about the said character.

Didn't your other idea about reputation include a system with points? I think it's much better than something that is completely subjective.

Once mudsexxed with dyasha and her bear.

Once did it with a centaur...neeeeigh.

Would tap anything with a pulse. Stupid delf jinnahran.

It's rumored they moonlight at the red swan for 2 coppers.

I'd have a lot of fun with the rumor command if I could write them for other people.

I like the idea. If the players respect the potential behind it and create a real myth/background for their characters this way, it may add a whole lot to the game. Of course, I am hesitant about players who would simply use the feature to build a stupid divination of their character that does not reflect the truth or sides of it at-all.

Perhaps it would be a good idea if you can edit your reputation ONLY in lower levels or in the very first IC years of your character.

There's two reasons for this suggestion:

1. The need for a character-built reputation can serve for the character's background, so it would be handy especially for things regarding the character before getting really known in the game, like ie: Elf Bigname was raised by a poor family, although there is rumor that his mother has also come in close contact with humans. But as long as someone starts interacting in the game, he does "build" his reputation anyhow, and that is indeed the REAL reputation he creates on the realms.

2. It would avoid cases in which someone might wanna scribe a myth about himself that does not reflect the reality of his character. For example, someone who eventually turns out to be a horrible wimp, running away from fights like a coward and everyone in the realms think he's an joke, should not be able to scribe a reputation that "the people think he is a mighty warrior, although he often has to break lose of his position for strategic reason".

Just my two cents (or a bit more :P)
