Hey... You're not the only one. ;) Lately, I just happen to be in an inn I'm probably not supposed to be in. :P

I'd like to welcome you to Shattered Kingdoms as well.
I believe that what was said so far pretty much covers what you'd need to know. Also keep in mind that you can use the tell command to communicate with everyone in the realms ("Who" will give you a list of all players online).
Check their titles and seek help accordingly. I am sure that the moment a player realizes that you are new here, he will go out of his way to help you.
You will find that if anything SK is a very newbie friendly mud.

If you find yourself REALLY stuck you can use the pray command (with an OOC prefix for out of character communication) that will transmit your message to any online immortal at the time (we are not always visible).

The Most important command mentioned here is the *Mentor*
command. If you get an experienced player to mentor you
you shouldn't have any problems.

I would like to expand on the fact that the Mentor command can only be used in an Inn on your home kingdom. That means if you're from Uxmal, you can only use the mentor command in an Inn in Teron / Uxmal. (Some areas may be flagged as an Inn but not really look like it, while others can say they're an inn but not be flagged .Look for the regen bonuses. IE : The Comfort of the inn puts you at ease.)

However, additionally, anyone above mentor can teach you in any inn in any kingdom, so that's something to remember. Don't hesitate to walk in an inn, RP a bit and ask people there if they can help you learn [insert skill here.] Most will either directly teach you, others may point you in the direction of an NPC trainer that can teach you. Best of luck to you.

Thank you again for all of the advice. I hadn't thought to use the mentor command because for some reason I thought once I reached Novice it wouldn't allow me to do it anymore. I see now that I can use it for quite a good while longer, so I will try that.

I was also wondering, is there a best place to start a new character? Is there a city that's more populated than others? Is there a class or race that's easier to level? I think it might be better if I started off somewhere that had a lot of people around to help out as well as lots of areas to level and what not? I think there will be time enough to branch out and try other more difficult characters once I've learned the ropes and found my way around a bit more.

Another question I had was about the emote command. It seems fairly straight forward, but I'm wondering if there was a way to target other players with your emotes?

Example:

emote turns to #slender and smiles warmly, inclining her head politely in greeting.

Slender would see - A short human female turns to you and smiles warmly, inclining her head politely in greeting.

Everyone else would see - A short human female turns to a slender human female and smiles warmly, inclining her head politely in greeting.

And if there isn't a way to do this, how do people get around it?

I think that's all the questions I have for now, but I'll probably think of something else in the coming days...

Welcome to SK.

*blink* that's a most simplisticly easy way to resolve a topic that seems to make the rounds every so often around here. It doesn't exist yet, but maybe Dulrik can take a look at your suggestion...

It all depends on style. Some people will use "you" when in private with another person, and some people will always emote as if writing for a third person. Generally, you don't put names in an emote. If there are more than two people in the room, what most (all) people do is something along the lines of

emote turns his head to look at the ominous woman/ominous half-elf/half-elven woman.

Those would be used when you want to turn your head to look at an ominous female half-elf (obviously).

There's no way to target someone with an emote, though you can with a social (note: be careful with socials, sometimes they don't do what you think they should). I always, always use the person's adjective and their race when 'targeting' them through a pemote or emote. I also always imagine that there's some invisible person watching me (sometimes there is!). So, with that in mind third person makes the most sense for everyone. If you've greeted someone for so long that you've forgotten their adjective, using the glance command will remind you of their race, adjective and sex.

As far as the most popular country/city: I'd do Taslamar (capital Exile) for lighties or (friendly) greybies or the Northern Wastes (capital Morksdal) for darkies or (mean) greybies).

Okay, some more questions... is there anywhere I can buy some maps for the city/countryside to avoid getting lost?

What the heck does it mean when it says n (murder hole)??

That's it for now!
