After a discussion with someone on YIM, I decided this was something worthy of consideration. Currently, laity has no fear of blemish for playing the game. There is only an RP value to blemishing members of the laity. They still get the bonus of being a member of a religion, whatever they may be.

My suggestion is to cut off all spells above novice for blemished spellcasters and cut off 1/3 of con for blemished fighters. I think this will be as effective a punishment to the laity as the current blemish is toward priests and paladins/hellions, taking the above statement into consideration.

Uh, no.

You can't recall while blemished(as far as I know) that's a big enough problem. And laity members aren't as devoted to their God/Goddess as Clergy are anyways.

The discussion centered around a player we both got headaches over who was blemished for a RL year. Blemish means virtually nothing to too many characters for it to be a real punishment of any sort or for it to correct any behavior whatsoever.

Uh...Can HFs not remove people from religions? If blemish isn't enough, do that.

I do believe once you're in, you're in. Only a god can get you out.

HFs can't remove you from religions no.

And I think being blemished and being unable to recall/quaff word potions is a big enough set back. :P
Really I think most HFs about arent all too worried about blemishing people anyway these days. That I've seen anyway.

Well, you still can't teleport while in melee.

Also remember, blemishing a priest/hellion/pally will render all spells initiate and over useless.
(I would think anyway, I have not tested that)

Yeah, that's well-known. The intent of this thread was to make -other- classes affected more by blemishment.

It isn't necessary, though. Having your recall taken away is bad enough, if you allowed for greater penalties then that would give less incentive to join religions with non-religion classes.

(Conversely, perhaps you're thinking that there are too many non-religion classes in religions. I personally don't think so.)
