I personally think that after a certain amount of OOC time, a player that has been blemished, should become a panthiest again. Something like 3-6months.

Should get a religion oath breaker flag then. Would be an easy way to hop religions.

Of course, I doubt any other god would accept an oathbreaker. Well, maybe Thuban.

There aren't enough (any?) tactical benefits for laity joining religions to warrant adding tactical disadvantages. They already get at least one disadvantage just for joining.

People join religions on non-clergy classes for the RP and friends. Obviously, if the rest of the religions hates you, you're not getting that anymore.

How is a blemished character hurting the church any more than the same character could if he was not part of the church?

A blemished lay-member can claim authority within the church when talking to non-members and nothing about the lay-member's activities will show a blemish. Raidot was the catalyst to this thread. He was blemished for more than a RL year. Never did he even attempt to atone himself. Seriously, if a lay-member gets next to no harm from blemish, why even bother accepting laity in religions?

I think that RP can make appropriate consequences in these circumstances. Being shunned by your religious comrades, being killed by their allies (in darkie and greybie religions), being refused aid by all who can be convinced not to aid a religious heretic, and perhaps in special circumstances some IMM RP over it. I don't think there really needs to be a hardcoded solution to it.

There is nothing stopping a non-member from "claiming authority" within a church. Anyone can set their title to "High Blade of Lord Dulrik" and proclaim the virtues of Truth to newbies. Nobody can tell what religion you are in except other members.

I think if a blemished character got an annual curse that may give them some motivation to not be cursed by the gods anymore.. also would give people a second thought before they'd do something to get them blemished. The bad thing would if the atonement RP was going on and a HF/staff not available. Hmm.
