There's already a mechanism in place for scripts which enables echoes (room, area, personal) to change the part of speech depending on the context.

Quote:
*SNAP* Ain's fingernail clipping hurtles across the room and slices your neck open!
*SNAP* Ain's fingernail clipping hurtles across the room and slices a rotund female gnome's neck open!
*SNAP* Your fingernail clipping hurtles across the room and slices Petunia's neck open!

Presumably, targetted emote code could modelled on the same. Don't know if D feels it's worth the trouble.

There's a precedent for semi-complicated scripting placeholders available to the masses in aliases and prompts. I could imagine targetted emotes being happily and correctly employed by a hardcore 5% of the mud...

Peace,
Bux

I personally would get really annoyed if someone made an alias for an emoted say and constantly used it.

Any different than if the suggested modification to 'say' was implemented? Or are you against that whole idea?

The pretense wasn't really for 'say.'

If I'm halfway across the fing town, how do I know a disheveled male human is shouting "I HEART FISHGIBBLE!" (jesus, you people screaming your love in Teron for Perrydindle need to stop)

I'm MUCH more likely to recognize a "gravely voice" yells "FISHGIBBLE GIVES IT TO ME IN THE BUTT" than to understand his adjective or his race. Same would hold true for a spirit in the afterlife or while blinded.

We are talking about two completely different things, not sure which one of us is off topic.

Me, I think. But I like the idea I was explaining more, so I was inclined to speak of it :P

I'm not opposed to targetted emotes. I might even be persuaded to do voice qualities. (Maybe...) The problem usually is that there are 25 different gameplay emergencies that need fixing that occupy my time. The lack of the RP stuff isn't actually breaking anything. But I do hear you when you say it might make the game more appealing to some.

Things like targeted emotes, emotes allowed with says, or the ability to put an adverb with a say, and universal position actions* have been brought up regularly and, for the most part, heartily supported.

While they don't make or break the game, one or more of these would be a huge sop for the RP-geared players. It would add flair and help make the game more immserive, and while some wouldn't use them, I'd wager the ones that do will do so to very great purpose.

*i.e. asay - asay pleadingly Please, Dulrik?
Threnody says pleadingly 'Please, Dulrik?'
Threnody says incomprehensibly 'Qmfbtd, Etmsjj?'
universal action = let actions work regardless of position, adding the position verb to the is of standing:
action here, pleading
Threnody is here, pleading.
sit
Threnody is sitting here, pleading.

Remember how big the push for pemotes was? Yeah. I try to use them as much as possible, but it's rare to see them.

So from an immortal standpoint - why bother?

I use them so often I have an alias for them. For example, they're fantastic for griffon characters, to emphasize their weird anatomy.

I agree the second idea isn't needed. A seperate emote works better. But not being able to target an emote makes them far harder to work than socials. (I really don't want to remember who has what adjective.) And while socials are nice for what they do, emotes are nice for what they do too.

I love emotes and pemotes. I am the most sarcastic [REDACTED] you will ever meet on those things.

Can we bribe you to spend some time on them? I'm all for using bribes!!
