Is it just me or are throwing weapons completely useless as a viable type of offense and exist with the soul purpose of making NPC's more annoying.

Giants boulder ability is completely useless because no matter what is thrown it shatters on impact...If you ask me 200lbs of addy wouldn't shatter as easily as the sprite that I threw it at, Also specializing in these weapons is pointless because skirmish doesn't really work as well with them.

For the record: I am not currently, nor do I plan to play soon, anything that uses throwing weapons. My thoughts on the subject come from the last giant barb I played that tried to use boulder as much as possible to see how good it could be. Even with max giant str the only way I could have more than one or two bolts is if I relied on toughness, as soon as I started wearing armor I was limited to three pieces of ammunition(Yes, I know if I joined a trib that would be doubled) Also, I've tried to specialize in throwing weapons on two other characters and it was a complete waste.

Maybe throwing weapons are suppose to suck, and my desire for them to be useful is misplaced. Or maybe I'm just doing it wrong...regardless. Discuss, and by discuss I mean argue.

Could those posting in the 'They have their place in the game, and that is enough' please elaborate?

I voted option 3 because it was the most noncommittal option available. I do remember when people filled up with practice daggers to throw at newbie area NPCs for better damage production. With one of the changes, this is no longer a viable tactic. Now NPCs load and throw tick-crumble weapons. I think both of these changes are the same change, and it's bad for the notoriously-difficult early level classes. But that doesn't make thrown weapons totally useless.

While I agree the boulder option is a barely-viable option for anything, it can be a temporary fix to a barbarian's PvE troubles. I've never used sling so I don't know how that works at all, but I believe there are some items that can be thrown into adjacent rooms. I suppose it might be viable for a melee class to throw weapons at an already-wielding NPC for faster killing or an unarmed NPC so the NPC will wield it. The second option for parrying practice, I suppose.

I'm sure there are other reasons thrown weapons are viable, but other than next-room situations, I don't see them viable in PvP. Then again, I readily admit I'm a perma-newb so my opinion will most likely be rightly valued as such.

I think all of the coding put in on NPCs and players throwing weapons has been a waste thus far, unfortunately, and I wouldn't support any coder spending time on fixing it or any builder trying to make 'nice' throwing items to encourage their use. Abandon it.

Ibudon and Cilek tested throwing spears on centaur scouts. They are actually pretty damn good with skirmish. I remember them doing pretty amazing damage.

The only problem is that size large spears take up a lot of space and weight. You could carry around 16 of them or so, which was enough to waste most opponents at that time, but then you'd be fubar if there was anyone else to kill.

Finding the spears was another issue too.

Though there may be a shop that sells throwing spears now.

I still throw daggers when I level btw.

I guess my real gripe is quantity and weight.

I want Jarlaxle style magical items to create throwing weapons on demand. I don't think its asking to much, every sentient NPC has that same ability.

Throwing weapons (outfit;throw dagger) as a newbie is great, except that some enemies now wield weapons thrown at them.

My problem with thrown weapons is that every NPC seems to have throwable weapons now. Naked slave on a pirate ship? OH HO, EXCEPT FOR THE SIX BILLION THROWING AXES I HAVE!

WTG realism, I guess :-?

Boulders are starting attack items. They have their place, basically giving giants a rather weaker version of old ambush that adds lag (boulders bash, if I recall, right?). You shouldn't spam throw through a fight. They are pretty good for what they are.

Skirmishing with throwing spears is better than bows, but require being in the same room. Again, I might be outdated, but it seems the case.

The rest I would think is worthless. Might practice throwing daggers, but...

My 2 cents.

Assuming I were playing the game again, and I were playing a caster, I might have done a fair amount of levelling with large size daggers, during the lower level range. Second attack + decent str + large size daggers = a surprising amount of damage = a surprising amount of levelling without need of rest and recuperation. So... Maybe you're doing it wrong?

Peace,
Bux
