Do some weapons do more damage than others? ie. Would it be stupid of me to make an elven mercenary who specializes in the staff?

Yeah, that would be pretty stupid. Weapons have three stats: Speed, Damage, and Accuracy. Speed affects how many attacks you get. You typically want a weapon that will give you at least four attacks at Grandmaster. Damage is obvious: the average damage you do every successful hit. Accuracy makes you parry incoming attacks better and makes your attacks harder to parry (or dodge, or shield block, or deflect with your armor).

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post information about specific weapons here. If you'd like me to email you, I have a list of weapon stats. I may be absolute crap at actually fighting in-game, but I'm at least good at theory.

You can use the COMPARE command to see the difference between two weapons in a pinch.

>compare staff dagger

Or, to compare with what you've already got equipped - say if you're wearing the staff, and have the dagger in your inventory -

>compare dagger

And it will compare the weapons in each of the three categories.

Without going into too much detail, there may be some benefit to picking a weapon that's less damaging, but has a higher speed and accuracy. Don't base your decision on damage alone.
