A few ideas I've been brewing on.

1) Certain shopkeepers could have a small selection of items available only to a certain race or class. These items needn't be tagged in any special way, the only limitation is in who is able to purchase them. These would not appear on the list of available items for non-applicable characters.

2) Haggle could surpass this limitation, provided the character has enough CHA.

3) Haggle could also allow a player to buy items even when the shop is closed. A CHA check could be invoked that requires a greater CHA when the shop has been closed for several hours.

I see two possible implementations.

The first is to make a simple CHA check on the character when she attempts to look at the shopkeeper's wares. If she has enough CHA, she can buy as normal. If not, it is closed as normal.

Another possible form of this implementation would be to add a command for characters with haggle: bargain. When a character enters a shop that is currently closed, he can bargain shopkeeper to see if he will make an exception and open up for him, whether because of the character's intimidating tone, or his endearing pleas. Once a shopkeeper has been bargained, he stays open for two hours.

It could be made easier to bargain a shopkeeper when multiple people are in the group, as the shopkeeper sees that he would be forgoing quite a lot of money by denying these people his wares.

Just some ideas.

LOL! I have to agree with the last two posts.

However, I do see the point you are making and have to admit you do have a decent idea. If one comes across a shop that actually has a shopkeeper in it during the hours it would be closed, it seems logical that someone could convince the shopkeeper to sell them his wares. I think, though, the shopkeeper would offer his items at a slightly higher price than normal. To reopen his store just for one person or group would be quite an exception and an opportunity to make a bit more coin. That is just me, though. Extortion can be a beautiful thing.

I guess the simple fix for closed shops would be for a single room to be created that has -no possible way in and no possible chance to summon out- for all KDs to script all shopkeepers to be in that room during 'closed' hours.

Closed shops can be a nuisance. So can that evil dude that just killed you, took all your stuff and reported you for attempted murder in the process.

What I want to see is the haggling taking place before the shopkeepers' check on the money you carry. In other words if a sword costs 10 gold and you can lower the price to 8, it will be possible to buy it carrying 9 gold and you won't have to run back to a bank while you have already the money that you will give in the end.

edit: I don't even want to mention the case when you go to the bank and you return to see the shop closed while you had the money needed.

Too easy to cheat the system. All you have to do is carry less money and then hit buy over and over again to force the shopkeeper to sell it at a lower than normal price. Probably why it got changed to that in the first place.

I actually agree with both of these. It makes perfect sense to be able to haggle the price down before considering the money you have. But I also agree that system would be broken the moment it got installed. But it would be nice to master haggle without ever actually buying anything. ;)

I can see your point Seraphiction. You still spend your time trying to haggle. I don't consider it a cheat. And if the players abuse it to master the skill then Dulrik can make it to master harder so that you spend less money and more time. I know he can do it because he (or another imm) asked once which skills are mastered too fast or too slow.
