I'd only agree to this if people weren't forced to participate in it. My whole concern is someone judging my RP based off the backstory of my character because more recent events could have my character RPing completely differantly then what is assumed I'd be doing through the backstory.

The game is to fluid to allow for people to judge others RP based off a backstory. We would almost have to be able to change our backstory on a day to day basis depending on what rp events the person participated in on that day. A characters current life can greatly overshadow the past, and be rp'd that way quite easily.

I'm ok with it if it's an optional thing, and if it is ever put in it would almost have to be editable.

It would definitely be optional. It would be something you added to in installments. Anything but the most recent installment would not be editable - you can't be allowed to rewrite your history whenever you want.

As for being judged based on it - IMO people who have a back-story should be judged more leniently than those who don't bother. Just writing a story for your character means you have to put thought into it, and as long as you mean what you are writing, almost guarantees a better RP experience.

I like the idea if it's optional and expandable. It sounds like a great tool for IMMs and players to discern intentions and keep track of developments in a character. I'm not sure if I would ever want another character to know my back-story or if I'd ever be interested in just outright reading someone else’s in game. I've always thought fleshing out back-stories and motivations was part of what the afterlife forum was for.

My suggestion if you're having problems typing out your back-story for new people that you meet is to make a set of says and emotes and either make an alias for them or copy them into a notepad. This will probably come off as pretty lazy if it is used too much, though, and you would do well to be sure not to just copy everything in too quickly, as going too fast through everything will make it feel even more artificial and make many people disinterested.

One other idea about it that I had forgotten was that we might set something up to allow the backstory to be published as part of a character's afterlife thread once they had deleted. Would be a great way of showing off a character's life and some motivation to keep it regularly updated with big events that happened during the character's life.

Can the game pull stuff out of the forums or something similar? The reason I ask is based off of what you just said. When the forumid command in the game is submitted, the char would be attached to the forumid. Then through the forums that person can edit and amend their backstory. Something like a mini-blog.

I'd rather have the story accessible to be read and shared in-game. Having to go out of the game for any reason leads to less immersion.

Also the relationship of character to forumID is not necessarily 1-to-1. I don't think there is anything stopping you from currently having multiple characters while using only one forumID. If we exported the backstory to the forums, it would be posted from some sort of admin account.

Keep in mind none of the code for any of this backstory idea is currently written. It would be a new feature, and one that is not scheduled to be worked on anytime soon.

The only reason that I suggested to let it to be managed on the forums because it is much easier to handle on a forum based side then in game. That is why I also asked if the game can pull stuff out of the forums, also. Just because info can be sent. Doesn't mean it can receive it.

I'd be happy with that. As long as you can constantly add to it, then I wouldn't have a problem with writing one myself.

When could we expect something like this to get implemented?
