If I'm reading the script right, it's that once you attack your charmie, you lose charm over them. a.k.a. you're not allowed to beat your slaves type of rule. So the old man attacked him, but the player still couldn't attack back since he was still under the charm spell and that's not supposed to happen.

I resemble that remark.
