On a more serious note, this argument is a bit moot anyway. Even known fantasy artists who pass off their work as "original" have blatantly ripped off mythological names, figures and creatures. Woe to us, if we were to track down all sources of inspiration.

Also, I seriously loathe Drizzt. What a f'cking crybaby. Bah.

The true hero was Wulfgar. Totally.

Firstly, the character Bree should feel free to pray and get a rename as it seems they're agreeable to doing so. Provided you're not GM I don't see a problem with it. I raised it to the other immortals when it was brought to my attention by a player, however I don't think any imm has taken action yet.

Secondly, any mention of unoriginal NPCs, areas or in-game themes created by past or present builders is outside the scope of this discussion (hell, I was the one who renamed the NPC "Flodnag"). We're talking about characters created by players that are specifically asked questions that demand originality during creation.

Personally, I see unoriginal names as an slight to everyone else in the WHO list who did come up with an original name. One of the first steps I suggest during discussions with real newbies when explaining HELP NAME is to type WHO and get a feel for how everyone else is creating fresh, original characters that don't come with any pre-conceived reputations - the canvas is entirely blank for every single one, and it's yours to create from scratch. From the first time you meet and greet them or via tells, you gradually learn about each character from scratch.

That's also why I don't even answer when the odd real newbie asks me to decide an original name for them: they need come up with it on their own, because they'll own it and enjoy the fact that they created every single facet of the character - from creation to deletion.

Someone hand me some scotch; I've posted more this week than I have in the last 3 months, I think.

Really. I'm an advocate of the keyboard headbang, but seriously . . . . Flajfedds is NOT a name. Period.

Teehee :)

I agree - mash the keyboard with the nearest pet by all means, but please at least remove some adjacent consonants afterwards to make it pronouncable.

It is VERY hard to come up with an original fantasy name. I have often thought that I finally made it, only to google the name afterwords and discover that it exists as a word in some language or even as a name in something previously created.

Err.. you do know about the page below, right?

http://www.shatteredkingdoms.org/mudname.php
(requires flash)

Shamefully, I don't recall the name of the player who contributed it - but it's a good fallback if you get stuck.

I always ask Cion for a first name, and Konge for a last name... Tends to work out fine for me. Except when I do gnomes/strange halflings I love coming up with those names on my own... Nacklewyn Turfoodle, Dyilras Dingleberry, Wimkin Wobblysprocket... all beauts.
