Yep, it's an automatic skill. All automatic skills are not blockable by that protect spell. However, feel free to quaff stoneskin or rely on shieldblock/dodge.

I thought Snuffles was talking about a different method of "protecting" yourself from counterstrike.

Make love to warlocks. Stone skin is the best/only defense. Even the smallest damage attacks, or certain cabal skills that don't actually cause damage, result in huge damage counterstrikes.

That or have a pet to take the counterstrike for you.

I was, using a certain cabal ability. But it still doesn't help you avoid the counterstrike and attack the barbarian, just protects you from damage.
