summoning every single gate target they can think of then ambushing every player who gates in is sort of abusive in my opinion, but I cant really think of anything else that is too horrible

There are some very easy solutions to making you able to have gate anchors again (e.g., pets gateable and/or remove the restriction for only being able to gate to "named" targets) but they seem to be getting no traction with Dulrik. I don't know why.

What about a spell that allows you to set an 'anchor' to a place you've been to for as long as you're online, and the name of the target is something you designate? Detect magic can find it and casting gates to it costs a larger amount of mana than it would a normal gate spell. It doesn't let you bypass no-gate/no-summon areas, so in these areas setting up an anchor does not work. Setting a new anchor in a place that's already anchored is spell vs spell, and the succeeding spell stays in place.

As a downside, it can be dispelled with dispel magic.

Make it Sorcerer-only?
