What? Riposte used to be at expert level. I don't see a need for it to be at a lower level in any case. I don't even get your reasoning, "it's like a better parry." How is that supposed to persuade anybody?

Finesse is the key to the swashbuckler's success as it provides him with
the edge he needs in several important areas.

This needs to be buffed, Swashbucklers should get some much more serious bonus points to beating armor and defensive skills and disarming, this should be a huge strength for swashbucklers and it's not yet.

I know this is what finesse already is "supposed to do..." But I think it needs to be a lot better.

I also do not see enough of this bypassing of heavy armor benefit that The Cannibal is talking about. And I disagree with Archaicsmurf too.

Additionally, the aiming bit that gilgon suggested is too much, too easy to remove arms, finess should take care of this! I think this is a fair compromise between gilgon and what's there now.

Finess is supposed to be the -SOUL- of a swashbuckler.

Finesse does not need strengthened. There are so many benefits that it already gives.

I can agree with the fact that they can be somewhat boring, which is why I started the thread. It was the weakness comment that ambushed me.

My ideas so far are:
1. Separate the effects of taunt into two different skills.
2. Add a roundhouse kick skill to let you get in two hits when using kick.
3. Give them at least one new non-combat skill. I liked the idea of a streetwise skill that somehow lets them locate other people.

Why would a roundhouse kick hit someone twice? Do you have three legs?

You've never seen a martial artist kick twice in one motion?

You know what would make swashbucklers, and pretty much all the other classes more interesting?

Trade skills.

Edit: I've just had an interesting idea that could add some flavor to swashbucklers by giving them some utility.

It would be a skill called "Scavenge" and in essence it would allow a swashbuckler to scavenge a corpse, looking for any useful remains, be they items, tools, consumables, or anything similar. If you imagine that each person has "hidden" items that they keep concealed from sight disabling you to find them by simply examining their corpse, then you would need a skilled swashbuckler who is used to looting the corpses of those foolish enough to cross blades with him.

Scavenging a corpse wouldn't always yield results, in fact I would imagine that a 30-40% chance for a GM swashbuckler to successfully find anything would be quite adequate.

What one could find by scavenging a corpse could be an assortment of various good, ranging from weak to powerful vials, either containing useful spells or simply being brewable, to scrolls with similar attributes, valuable gems, gold bars that could be sold for a good amount of coins, throwing weapons, tools to help rid yourself of dirt in your eyes, perhaps even introduce a new item called 'repair kits' which would in essence allow you to repair a piece of light armor by one condition (for example: from very good to superb), these would of course be consumable items. The possibilities are endless.

I also almost forgot to mention that the usefulness and the quality of the item found by successful scavenging would depend on the level of the scavenger.

So...give them an ability to find stuff in corpses that isn't really there? Everyone can scavenge. You go through the person's stuff and find all the crap inside the robes/scabbard/backpack. Sorry, but I'm not seeing the point of this.

Repair kits I could definitely get behind. That's not really related to swashies, though. Maybe in another thread.

Now for Dulrik. Dulrik, you said you wanted to wanted to give them a streetwise sort of skill. A city-style track would definitely be cool, yes. I'd be all for it. If you're going to go for the streetwise city-slicker sort of thing, I'd suggest a sort of inverse sneak. Sneak makes it so that when you walk into a room, people don't see you right away. You could give swashies a skill that makes it so that when other people walk into the room, they don't see you right away. Actively typing 'look' would let you see them. It would only affect the initial view of the room, like a one-shot hide skill.

*funny shrug smillie*

I suppose scavenging corpses could sound a bit silly. You could always make it a herbalism type skill that only works in cities.

*shrug*

Either way, it gives swashbucklers some sorely needed utility.

I like tradeskills. But anything that involves the addition of tradeskills should involve all classes, not just swashbucklers.

I like that inverse sneak as an idea, but not for swashbucklers. The theme of swashbucklers in my mind is to be as flamboyant as possible, so that skill would be the exact opposite of what I'm going for.

give them repair!

"Hey swashface can you repair my gauntlets?"
"HAHAH, of course I can you silly fool, what do you take me for, a merc?"

:D

It would help with keeping blades/mithril repaired.. saving a lot of coin. They have to be holding a forge hammer though. Sell them next to shovels!

It is obvious that eyepatches are the only real winner here.

Okay, let me pour my sheer awesome onto this thread.

Swashi charisma based ability.

Quote:
Distract

Syntax distract, distract crowd

Using their sheer force of personality and charming wit, a swashbuckler may cause others not to notice anything around them but the swashbuckler's antics and magnetic demeanor. This skill has both a passive use (syntax: distract), which causes others not to notice right away who the swashbuckler is traveling with, and an activated use (syntax: distract crowd) which causes everyone in the room to notice little else but the swashbuckler for a short period of time.

Passive Mechanics

For the passive ability, what actually occurs is that if the swashbuckler is on the front row of the formation, then they will make a charisma based check against everyone in the room that they are entering. For every 5 points of charisma that the swashbuckler possesses, they can hide the movements of one non-sneaking person in their group. The swashbuckler can not be sneaking or the skill will not work. The skill does have a half-save message as well. Anyone who does not make at least a half-save will have their look command disabled from looking at anything but the swashbuckler for 5 seconds.

Unsaved

A flamboyant male human struts into the room, you can't help but gawk.

Half-saved

A flamboyant male human struts into the room from the north, you are briefly distracted by them.
Someone enters the room from the north.
Someone enters the room from the north.
Someone enters the room frlom the north.

Saved

A flamboyant male human struts into the room from the north but no one cares, in fact, you think you hear derisive laughter directed at them.
A slack-jawed male gnome enters from the north.
A mouth-breathing female elf enters from the north.
A water-brained male giant enters from the north.

Activated Mechanics

At any time a swashbuckler may type 'distract crowd' and make a charisma based "attack" (note it's not a crime) on everyone currently in the room, this includes party members. The swashbuckler attempts to make everyone stare at them for a short period of time, during which, no one will see -anyone- who enters or leaves the room for a short period of time based on the swashi's charisma. In effect, the look command is disabled except for look swashi for 5-15 seconds. Also, all leaving and entering messages are squelched for anyone under the effect of this form of distraction for the duration. In addition, if anyone begins concentrating on a spell, no one under the effects of distraction will notice. This skill costs me/pe with each activation.

If a person is attacked while under the effects of distraction, the effect immediatly ends.

All attempts to steal from and plant on a person under the effects of distraction have double the chance of success.
