Thanks for the comments and advice. I think the most helpful thing to me personally was the suggestion to consider being charmed as if you're a mindless puppet following your master's orders, not an adoring and willing servant. I can see that working much better than trying, as an elf, to roleplay out adoration for an abhorred race. That's a very useful way to look at it.
