I know that Int is the main thing in getting better at skills, spells, and songs.

I'm wondering what else, if anything, plays a factor in getting the automatic "you got better at such and such" messege.

Level difference between you and target? How close you are to mastering it?

There's a bell curve to how quickly you get skill-ups based on how good you are at that skill. You'll get the most frequent number of skill-ups around good, and the least at awful/superb. Each skill also has a different frequency for improvement, adjusted based on how often the skill is activated. Resurrection, for example, has a very high chance of skilling up with each cast, because it's an expensive spell that you don't get to cast very often. Second attack, on the other hand, is relatively low, because it is activated (or fails to activate) with every round of combat. Beyond that, intelligence is the only other determining factor.

I say that no matter what it is, practice it! Whenever you can use a skill/spell, jump on the opportunity! Heal strangers, fight around with char's of lower level (for some fun RP and) for practice with weapons/skills you suck with, and even a bit alone if everyone else is being boring. Or at least that's how I'm doing it and it seems to work. I'm no expert I suppose.

Is spamming spells/abilities appropriate? Assuming you're by yourself in an out of the way place?

Yep, people do it all the time.

Yes, it's in fact a good idea in some cases. Cure deafness, for example. If you ever need to cast that crap in combat on yourself and it isn't mastered... good luck.

Talk to someone in your class ICly about tricks to mastering skills and/or spells more quickly. They exist, and they'll make your life easier.

I know that you learn the most from somone who's mastered it, but if two people are both superb at it, does it make a difference which teaches you? (If one's more superb than the other)

Indeed, a mastered skill will be taught to one level from superb, while someone who's just gotten to superb, you will be one level from very good.
