Ok, I've looked a little bit but it might just be as easy to ask. The sorcerer spell of Charm Person, is that an attack. Such as if I cast it upon someone I wish to charm will they attack me if it fails and What are the levels one can charm at the journeyman level?

They'll attack you if you fail. But I don't know the levels thing. It's more powerful than dominate, I believe.

It is more powerful the dominate. I believe dominate goes up to mentor, and the sorcs. Run around with Lathern with him beefed up so. I think Lathern is one of the strongest you will get and you probably have to be champ or GM.

P.S. Don't quote me on that I haven't made a sorc that high.

Charm person is an aggressive spell that initiates combat. However, when the target is sleeping, or is not in melee range of you, you can keep casting the spell at them without initiating combat. They won't even get a message that you're trying to charm them, though people would be able to go report you for the crime. I'm not entirely certain why it doesn't always initiate combat. I just sort of accept that it sometimes doesn't, and chalk it up to having to do with melee range.

Charm person is -way- more powerful than dominate. Hellions can only dominate things that are well below their level. I think the best a gm hellion can do is a high expert NPC, considering at no match. Sorcs can charm things that are well above their level. I don't know exactly what you'd be able to charm at j-man. You'd have to test it out, but I'd guess you would be able to manage charming expert or low mentor lvl NPCs and pcs. Lathron is the strongest charm out there, and you'd probably be able to charm him when you're only at high mentor status or so.

Any vets should feel free to correct any misinformation in this post. I haven't exactly tested out any of this.

I had an expert sorc not too long ago that could charm lathron and all the others as well.

I really dont know if level has anything to do with what can be charmed.

I'm pretty sure level is factored in somewhere, though I could be wrong. There were NPCs I couldn't charm at j-man that I was charming at expert. It's a little scary to think that an expert lvl sorc has access to Lathron, though. :o

So, I wonder if I stand behind a pet and try to charm something than would consider to be a tough challenge or a more powerful than me it might not start combat becuase it's not in melee range of me, or can I try to charm something that in the next room?

The target has to be in the room as you (charm person doesn't have range). I think combat will be initiated if the target is in melee range of anyone in your group (including your pet). The situation you described does initiate combat. I wasn't clear earlier, partly because I'm hazy on it myself.

I don't know if this question can be anwswered but where can one find some expert to veteran NPCs to practice on so I can find out where the limit to my charm person effect is? Perhaps somewhere I wont get in trouble with the law, it's would be out of my char RP to purposley break the law.

Try around teron, theres lots of NPCs that can be charmed. Just use the consider command to tell around what level they are.
