I feel rather ashamed for having to ask this, but I just started and I can't understand why I'm not looting anything from the NPCs I'm killing. Many of them have eq on when I start (and just before the end) of battle. With auto loot/sac/junk on I get nothing. So I tried turning them all off and manually picking items out of the corpses. But now I find money and no items.

Is there no way to loot items from NPC corpses, or am I just screwing up something fundamental here?

Thanks and sorry for the trouble,

Deadrick

type config. It'll tell you what "autos" are on.

if auto loot is on, you should get the loot from the corpse that YOU kill, so long as you're not blind or dirted

I've got the proper autos on, but I gain no equipment from NPCs upon their death - no matter if I try to do it automatically or manually. Is all of the equipment in the newbie school rot_death perhaps?

Do you mean this kind of equipment:

<Worn on body> Wizard's garb

?

Exactly. That was one. There were some chainmail suits also being worn on body by the Sergeant, for instance.

Those are not technically equipment. Think of them more as the default skins the NPCs have to reflect their likely AC, given their profession, without cluttering up the game with dozens or hundreds of suits of low-quality armor.

Ah, that would explain it. Thanks!

Is there any way for me to know when a piece of equipment is really as lootable item?

On humanoid NPCs, there are only three kinds of default skins. There's the Wizard's Garb for cloth classes, the Light Chain for light armor classes, and then the Steel Plate for the heavy armor classes. Every once in a while you'll see a "fur" or a "hide" of some kind on non-humanoid classes, but in general you can tell the default skins by the fact that they are coloured the same as the default text colour in your client. Most builders put or at least change colour from that when making new items.

...Also, you could just kill it and it would drop something, but that's a far less reliable method, given the lethality of some NPCs in this game.
