A smooth stone crumbles into dust.

that's a generic message for any kind of auto-decay. thrown weapons/ammo from NPCs decay because nobody wants a hundred [REDACTED] worthless stones and daggers lying everywhere.

Digging stones is no different from fletching arrows, it's not a skill but it does require PE. It's only going to be done when needed (so it's unlikely that they'd be laying everywhere). I wanted to try and use the "useless" sling skill that I hope was not a waste of implementation time. Gathered ammunition. Then it crumbled (I cut the log short, it was actually about 50 stones). Which is not the case with arrows.

Either this further proves why almost every player (myself as the exception) doesn't even bother to learn the skill, or it's a bug.

I don't think dug stones should crumble (Only the ones that NPCs throw at you) so yes, that looks like a bug. Slings are actually useful, but the right occassions to use them are quite few and far between: Probably precisely why no one even found out about this bug until you pointed it out just now.

Yeah, it has always bothered me that dug up stones crumble like this. After I spent the time to master sling on Aneira, I never used it again.

I only train it so if I'm in a tight spot and they throw stones at me I can throw them back. :P Otherwise with the ammo issues it is pretty useless.

It looks like it is a building object issues. The same stones that you can dig in the wilderness are the same object that the NPCs throw at you. The ones that the NPCs throw at you should fall apart the ones in the wilderness should not.

Without wanting to reveal IC info, does anyone really use dug up stones?

I dig up stones for fun when bored. Master sling and then never use it again.
