You use to be able to access it with the wand of chaos even after they closed off the entrance, was not much there, a few books, scrolls and such, but I believe now they have took the location the wand did send you on the fourth zap and changed it to where it is now totally offbounds.

My character has a bit of an understanding ICly of what happened to Krychire, but I have no idea OOCly of what happened.

Was the event an excuse to close it off?

Was it closed off because the event suggested it, and the Imms were playing along?

Was there some giant bug that needed to be fixed?

It was even that came along because of several reasons. It had nothing to do with a bug. I'd explain more, but the event had an open ending that suggests that more may be done with it in the future. There are still people ICly who know what happened, how and why. If you're that curious, I'd start with them.
