You boggle at the concept.

say The hells?
You ask 'The hells?'

Luckily, a nice IMM transferred the item back to me, but at the risk of sounding ungrateful, it starts with zero enchantments and I had great protection and moderate will on that one, which is unlikely to happen again without some time.

That said, any reason in particular why armor crumbles like this? Is it limited to certain pieces (If so, I might avoid this particular piece in the future) or any other thoughts as to the matter?

Maybe you should get an item that already has enchants and enchant it.

I have seen three types of crumbles:

1. Items from murdered shopkeeper corpses.
2. Sacred gear
3. Random vendortrash (c.f. Chibunei shirts, thrown weapons, etc.)

Ouch. The helmet that the IMM replaced it with (The same helmet) was nosave too, apparently. I logged back in and it was gone.

Be warned, anyone who's planning on getting that helmet for their character.

Add 4. Item that due to some freak reason have spawned more than their "limit" (that is to say the maximum amount of said piece of equipment).

And I think we have what happened here. The helm shouldn't rot out of nowhere, so I think people can safely get it still.

JVJ am smrt.

That is the most likely cause. Although, there is a fifth thing that can make things crumble.. a timer that limits their existence. There was an item that had 1000 ticks and after it crumbled an Imm was contacted, they deemed it sensible to remove this timer because the item in question did not have any special powers.

I'm guessing one of the answers here is correct. I'm leaning toward the over the limit crumble myself.
