The purpose of auto-surrender is to allow a character to purposely surrender to the law. The way it works now, it is easy to accidentally surrender (or not surrender when you'd rather surrender). Changing it to work this way, it would be a conscious decision made by a character to surrender or not.

I don't think "accidental surrenders" is big enough of a boon to tribunals to change the way they're balanced. Especially since it seems most people want this so they DON'T accidentally surrender, which would mean their crimes would stack up, which would make them easier to banish.

Agree. Surrender should be a command, and not a toggle.

Achernar. This makes no sense at all.

Unless you're saying it's hard to toggle auto surrender ON PURPOSE and go turn yourself in...Which...makes no sense.

Maybe Achernar meant to post in that "players can settle disputes" thread.

If someone wanted to turn theirself in to avoid banishment...They'd type auto surrender and then walk into a guard. You don't need an in battle 'surrender' to help any further with being able to avoid that. And actually, it doesn't help it at all but makes it harder to surrender because you would have to actually type it in battle instead of it working by itself.

So, wait, let me get this right...

- if you want to surrender, and your toggle is correctly set, and you walk into a city and find a guard, that works fine.

- if you don't want to surrender, but your toggle is set to surrender, the guards jump you and you're stuffed. (cue ba-bow music as the guards surprised you and you're taken away)

- if you do want to surrender, but your toggle was set wrongly, you approach the city (because you intended this before you ever travelled there, right?), find a guard and start a fight... you want them to stop fighting and just take you away... right?

Just so we're clear before proceeding...

Add to those three the following:

If you decide to approach the city to surrender but your toggle is not set, changing your toggle will not stop any currently angered guards from chasing you.

And to add two more:

Sometimes auto surrender mysteriously changes itself, I think several people will vouch for this - unfortunately, no one has successfully and reliably duplicated this.

If you find yourself overmatched by a group of guards and recognize that you are in deep fecal matter and want to avoid getting a few muggings/murders thrown on top of your sentence, auto surrender does not allow you to surrender while fighting them.

Having combat code check during a fight for changes in a surrender toggle is a bit much; changing your mind when everything goes pear-shaped is a bit late, really. Suggest you RP it ICly with the tribunal - parole, maybe?

The chase code, I might be swayed on, but in all examples put forward so far, the one heading into the city should have checked what they were doing. You don't go driving through an enemy warzone without checking that your car is clearly marked TV, etc.

Re. 'mysterious unwanted reversal of your surrender setting'? Logs please. Happy to investigate if proof is provided - just type AUTO by itself before you head in. I'm not aware of ANY code that flips ANY AUTO setting on your behalf. Should such a thing be coded it would have to do so rather carefully and be clearly reported to the player, I would have thought.
