I'm a veteran of the MUD, but I'm a first time Hellion player. I'm having difficulty landing a cleave to start my battle. I have a cleave weapon, and I've only just learned the skill 'cleave (good)'. I was curious, what all goes into determining if a cleave lands, and how powerful it is, if it lands?

Well first, you will not land a cleave if you are not awesome. It's just a rule of the game. I assume that like weapon skills the cleave skill affects your to-hit roll, so having it at good will make you miss a lot. Get better at it (there's even an advanced cleave trainer now, yay) to hit.

Its all about the weapon you use. Experiment with different weapons. A higher damage weapon, obviously, will give you more damage on a cleave but you also need to consider using an accurate weapon against a PC because if they expect the cleave they will be in stance defensive. Its tough to hit a cleave on a defensive target.

Ardith pretty much said it. Since we don't actually -know- for sure since the mud doesn't show us the numbers, I would say the following things factor into a cleave landing.

1. Strength
2. Accuracy/enchantments of weapon
3. Weapon skill.
4. Level of cleave skill.
5. Aggressive stance vs. neutral or defensive.
6. Of course, the target that you're hitting: Armor, stance defensive, shield, etc.

In my opinion one of the most important parts of these is the weapon. While a halberd cleave will hurt like a mother, it won't hardly -ever- land.

Halberd cleaves are brutal, but you will -never- land one on a defensive target, and in fact I'm willing to bet that hitting a neutral target would be iffy as well.

Try using a landsknecht. Those have reach, good damage, good accuracy, and they're not too hard to find. Oh, and find that advanced trainer.

Yeah, there's one really advanced trainer in the game, and a particularly notable butt kicking hellion who will tell you about him ICly if you ask.

I thought dex was pretty important too for landing it.

Quote:
Dexterity is the bridge between the mental and physical attributes of a
character. It tells how much one's mind controls one's body, mainly in the
form of reflexes. Dexterity affects the number of items a character may hold
at any given time, the ability to dodge attacks, and the distance one might
travel.

Quote:
Strength is the measure of raw physical power. It allows a character to
lift more weight without tiring. In combat, someone who has more strength
might deal a more destructive blow to another character, or control the
weapon more effectively (as in the ability to start or stop the motion of
a heavy weapon) thereby gaining a better chance of hitting the opponent.
It serves as a factor for other skills as well.

If dex has anything at all to do with landing attacks, the help files need changed.
