Just recently happened to me. I got killed by a necro and asked of course why. He proceeded to tell me that I was supposed to send a message to the hammer! My character who happened to be at war with the hammer doesn't quite get it so he pushes for elaboration, after all of his arguments broke down to terrible reasons to Jloot someone the necro replies. Your death was the message, and you were the first person I saw.

SK Character: RAWR!
I still maintain that's a pretty lame excuse for PK, and if you'd have attempted to argue it to a staff member, they'd probably agree. If you had no affiliation with the Hammer in any manner, the necro should have at the very least retracted the looting.

Unfortunately, there's quite a few players with very little interest in player courtesy.

Send a log of that to the IMMs. Please do it.

Agreed there, if anyone thinks they've been done a RPK injustice, can't hurt to send your friendly neighborhood Imm a log to their email (but not too much! They are busy people after all!).

As for player courtesy, I'd actually say it's better then it has been in the past. Far less random jlooting now I'd say. But jerks will still find more and more creative ways to be jerks. Just keep that logger on just in case ;)

The general standard is somewhere between #2 and #3.

Your alignment/race/class can get you killed in themselves, but it's not common. (That presumes you're being sensible. Parading your undead horde around most cities is asking for trouble. Same for flying your griffon character into an inn frequented by deep-elves.)

But you can get killed in response to events, with no explanation owed you. (Some visible sign of motive is considered good OOC courtesy, but omitting it is not a rule violation. In fairness, PK moves so fast that people can't stand around orating.) Just being in a city under attack may make you a legitimate target. Belonging to a faction, or ICly irritating powerful PCs, definitely makes you a target.

Standard #1, killing just because you're evil, is something that gets immortal attention, and not in a good way. Some selectivity is expected as a part of a character's motivations. (i.e. Playing a brigand who kills random PCs for money may be justifiable from a roleplay angle, but it's not acceptable here.) Standard #2 can fail the selectivity test as well, if taken too literally. PK is meant for enemies, not the general population.

You definitely don't have to worry about standards like #5-#6, or being stopped from killing if your character has IC reason. SK's motto is "Where roleplay and tactics collide". There's no intent to protect characters from IC conflict. At the same time, most cities have a law code where NPC guards attack and jail outlaws. Casual PK isn't worth the trouble there, so social RP is easy to find.

Forsooth hit the nail on the head, pretty much.

Also, it's good to have you!

I've met your character with a couple of mine already, and have to say you seem to be getting along just fine. Looking forward to seeing you kick some butt.
