ok so being a player who's only made light aura char of a priest and I tried a swashbuckler (the swashbuckler never made it past initiate before I lost interest) is a necromancer a good class to try? or is the learning curve of that class just something on those whom have played this game since birth should try?

I had my first necromancer not too long ago, and didn't think the learning curve was too high, and it was actually pretty fun. I say go for it.

They're a very frail class, which makes them harder to play if you're not well versed in where to find things.

I played a Deep-Elf Necromancer at one point in time and got her to GM and mastered the spell l ist. I'll say this about necros. First off, you WILL be hunted. Depending on who's playing light side, the moment you're a known necro, expect to die. A lot.

Secondly: Necros have a plethora of spells. Some are situational while others you can discern their use. Control undead, for example, pales in comparison to animate dead once you get to GM. The wraiths are so ridiculously powerful when given a weapon and ordered to berserk that any control is useless. It also has less concentration requirements than control. With that being said, they still are a fun class. Very powerful, but it requires time. Your wraiths and such are timed and it can be a real headache if you caught up in rampaging and forget when your wraiths will start dropping. All in all, I'd say give it a shot and see if you like it. Just, like I said, expect to be hunted and or griefed more than any other darkie. It comes with the territory.

Hrm, I don't know how to pk. Probably not a good idea. I don't need to be hunted right now. I don't know where to find anything yet. I barely know my way around a few cities. Thanks for the information. Perhaps I'll try one a bit later when I have more of a handle on things.

That can be said about pretty much anything in the game, and is terrific advice.

Kin, you're a newb if you think control dead is outclassed by animate dead.

I was able to play a necro with no knowledge of how to play them, no knowledge of where to find good gear, avoid the PK scene about 95% of the time, and still had a lot of fun. If you want to play one I say go for it, just be very careful who knows your class. If it gets around you could be given a lot of grief.

Damage wise it is. Just look at how many necros rely on animate dead for their damage output. I didn't say t he spell was useless, but yes it is outclassed once you get to GM. 18 berserked, furied wraiths vs 2 berserked fury barb NPCs? Sure the wraiths may not have much HP, but simple math dictates that 18 things hitting you for good - insane damage is more than 2 NPCs hitting you for insane damage. Honestly, I don't insult you, don't insult me. Courtesy is lacking not only in game but on the forums around here anymore..

Control undead always sucked and always will.
All you need is someone to show you why.

On topic,
Necros can be awesome both in RP, exploring & PK, if you are not bored to make the preparations required. After a while it can become a chore though.

Thankfully, no prep time is required to RP.

Sure necros are fragile + hunted but got enough resources to overcome almost anything if you're prepared to put effort into it.

All in all, the class got a million weaknesses but also potential in all aspects.
