Yeah, there's a bell curve on improvements - advancement rate is highest around good, and very slow at the low and high end. The only reason it might appear that failures have a higher chance of advancement is that the advancement rate is higher when you have like a 50/50 chance of success/failure. As evidence of this, try leveling spells at awful. You definitely aren't advancing faster than at poor or fair. Could be wrong, given that it's a black box, but that's my experience.

As for 3rd/4th attack, it's my understanding that you don't make the skill check for the attacks unless you have enough speed to execute them - and mood defensive lowers your speed. Additionally, make sure that whatever weapon you're using is netting you 100% of those attacks.

I'm pretty sure this is not true.

When I wear heavy armor that drops all of my spells to awful it gets better quickly. Just as quick as I've noticed it at fair or poor.

Mood defensive would be better, actually. Dodge, unlike most skills/spells, cannot be improved when you fail at it, only when you succeed, evidenced by the fact that you never get the "You learn from your mistakes and improve at dodge" message.

This is also why it takes so long to master that.

Also, I thought that this thread was going to be about how easy it is to dodge halberds, so I am kind of disappointed.

Sorry about my misleading thread titles!

Dodge and shield block are very easy and fast to master, you shouldn't even be worrying about it.

Third and fourth attack are easily mastered by using mood aggressive and a fast weapon.

Yet you'll notice that if your spell is at superb and you drop it to good or fair with heavy armor, the success rate will not increase. This means that the chance for advancement is based on the skill's natural level, not its modified level.

If I'm trying to train sneak, will spamming it work? Or do I have to move around while I'm sneaking?

Spamming works.

I have not found this to be true at all. Improving spells is a crapload faster if you're wearing heavy armor.

And yes, you can only improve at sneak by trying to sneak. Walking around while sneaking doesn't improve the skill at all.

Anybody that equips heavy armor, and sits and spams spells is a [REDACTED] [REDACTED].

The IMMs want to talk about [REDACTED] RP, and punish people for [REDACTED] crap? Punish that.

Some newbie who spent a couple hours wearing heavy armor and spamming spells shouldn't be as good at casting them as my 170 year old delf sorc, sorry.
