In my opinion should be removed. I understand the purpose of the game is conflict and such, but it shouldn't come down to the point that some people pretty much just see a dark aura and want to either attack or become incredibly hostile towards someone they don't even know. Evil should be judged by actions and rumors, not auras. Detect alignment should also go. There shouldn't be any magic possessed by a mortal that should show the soul of another. Just my 2 cp.

I think you're after spirit sight, then.

There are ways around alignment.

The only way I know around alignment is a certain religion spell. As for spirit sight, that's fine. All that does is allow a person to see a ghost who hasn't manifested, which is all fine and dandy. I'm more after spells who reveal one's aura / alignment.

Now, I mean theres other ways to tell if someone's evil. There's a lot of items that are aura restricted. So if you see a person waltz in wearing, i dunno say, a robe of human flesh or covered in bones..It's safe to assume that person is evil and all. I could see a person being uneasy or hostile towards someone like that. But when a person is generally wearing no aura restrictive items and is being cordial, it shouldn't be so simple as to just pop a spell and see that they're evil and may potentially kill you. It, to me, ruins the atmosphere and the surprise of it because you get the ooc knowledge that they -will- attack you and not from the mood of the atmosphere generated by the RP.

I hate to say it but this is a game of absolutes: light and dark. There's no areas of interpretation there. You want someone who doesn't judge on aura, you're playing the wrong game.

Priests and mages see the color of a soul. I like that, to be honest.

I totally understand that some characters judge based only on aura and I think that's valid and can be interesting but I don't see why that has to be the only way to play a character. I don't think the problem is with the spells. I'm new enough here that I could be totally off base though.

I agree with jerin and the melodrama that follows all of this silly absolutism.

I have a crazy idea: Let's assume that people who chose dark auras for their characters are actually playing evil characters, and let's assume that people who chose light auras for their characters are actually playing good characters.

White aura good, Dark aura.....CHARGE! But seriously, alot of characters are more complex then just being "bad" or "good". I do sort of agree that detect aura should be removed but at the same time there's many reasons for it to stay.

All I can say is this. Having detect aura doesn't stop you from not learning or not using it or looking beyond what you learn with it.

The main problem I have is with absolution itself. Yes white aura is good, dark aura is bad. All that stuff. The problem is, that a person's actions is what should make them good or bad, not just an aura of energy that surrounds them unless it's a tangible aura of evil (like the unholy death knight from the Necropolis) that you can literally reach out and touch. Some, not all people react differently based on whether you're light or dark aura, and well, darkies aren't just about killin em all.

For example:

Help diabolic

Diabolic characters are the cruel, heartless killers. They are the kind
who plot and plan to harm others simply for their own entertainment. This
does not imply that they do not have deeper goals, however. Their goals
are usually products of insanity and are too convoluted for the normal
person to comprehend. Diabolic people need not follow normal rules of
conduct, they can be the nicest, most generous person in the world one
moment, and the next, stab you in the back and steal everything you own.

The problem is, if people see your aura being dark, it kinda makes it difficult to actually befriend and stab someone in the back when they know it's coming. I like to think that evil isn't just mindless killing and twisted necrophilia and such just as lighties aren't all dimwitted compassionate fools. It's just that as it is now, this spell in my opinion kills a lot of RP potential unless you're capable of altering your own aura.

Anywho, that's just my stance on the subject.
