I'm just not surprised that new players think this way in the first place, and it's really sad. It's how everyone else plays the game nowadays... I totally don't place any blame on the player.

If anything, the "elitists" you're referring to in this post are probably more into the typical Y!IM circlejerk than this poor new player.

Frankly, at least she had the balls (even if it was accidental) to do it on the forums and not sneak around on messengers and then pretend like they aren't regular cheaters in the first place.

This is why I'm starting to understand why REAL elitist players don't reveal the name of their characters to anyone, and don't use Yahoo. Sadly, I do use Yahoo. But mostly people ignore me, or like to chat with me about ongoing RPs/in-game gossip, or occasionally ardith sends me a message asking why I'm online and not in the kitchen and telling me how awesome he is.

HOLY CRAP Orac made a post about people not being able to tell between OOC and IC info any more and it's elitism. Somebody call the Wh--wait no, it's already here. Please, please shut up. This sort of brainless whining ruins the game for me just as much as blatant OOCness and flaming.

I have to say I'm surprised at this.
Would you rather read a long block of text that comprises the rules before you even try the game out, or would you rather jump into the game to get a feel for it before you decide to spend any time reading the rules?

One of these is the legally correct answer. The other is what actually happens.

I don't fault the player at all, really.

Welcome to the game, Marilean. The learning curve is kind of steep in this game. It's not uncommon to have questions like yours answered by a more experienced player through some other ooc medium. I don't personally see a problem with helping a brand new player out by telling them things that most every other player knows and exploits with each character they make (like where to find a good dagger). It is, technically, against the rules, though, so it really can't be done through these forums.

I'm amused by who people think I was directing my comment to :P

I have always had the problem of getting decent EQ in the game while leveling.

I used to ask people where to find equipment IC, but I started to notice that most players use OOC information to just assume their character knows what their last character knows (when it comes to equipment). I've asked around, and it's the extremely rare minority that doesn't metagame their equipment and actually asks anybody after their first couple of characters.

Some things simply aren't worth bothering about. Seriously, how many times can you RP discovering the same suit of armor before you get bored and decide to fudge the whole thing? Some things are different, such as the infamous capitol of loot the Iron Citadel, but that's an exception since the area is very difficult to get to and RP-heavy. Well, that's the idea at least, regardless of whether it's actually difficult for you to get to and/or involves any RP at all. Some unique items are worth it, but in terms of everyday things like standard armor-getting, RPing the whole thing out is boring and not remotely worth your while.

I don't find a problem with RPing armor, in fact, I think it makes things -more- interesting, not less interesting.

That said, it isn't like it's hard to ask a priest/sorc/necro/paladin "Hey, can you locate adamantite/mithril/dragonscale/energy armor?" and just see what they get from that. If they aren't hoarded, that is.

This is why most people believe that my characters are always new to the game. I "forget" all the info like weapons, places to train, etc from character to character. It creates a much richer and fuller game experience for me. I equate it to the game of Madden football. Some people play on rookie so they can have a game of 77-4, where I like to play on all-madden as I have more fun playing on the edge, with the score at 13-14, 4th quarter and I got the ball on the 1yard line. I find enjoyment in the challenge and experience, not owning the [REDACTED] out of other people, cheating in the process. In fact, it even brings me great joy knowing that people have to cheat to defeat me.

As all you cheaters know I dont talk to any of you [REDACTED], OOC, save one person, who I like to play with so I find out who they are playing when I go to create a new character so that I can play with them. Also these forums.

Thanks again for having to cheat to defeat me. Suckers. Now go and make fun of my grammar, as that is all you have.
