Should book titles be displayed when examining the contents of a shelf?
Yes, that would be easier and convenient, like scanning the spines of books. 72%  72%  [ 18 ]
No, I prefer to take each one out individually to figure out what book it is. 8%  8%  [ 2 ]
Honestly, who reads the SK books? I just make stuff up for religions and stuff. 20%  20%  [ 5 ]

Currently, when browsing for books in shelves, you need to take each book out individually to open it and see what it actually is about. This is kind of a pain in the [REDACTED], especially in larger libraries like Zhenshi, etc... Wouldn't it make more sense if the title of each book were listed when you look in the bookshelf?

ex.

Look in bookshelf, you see:
"A tale of the gods"
"Bushido"
"The Dark Gods"

etc... instead of just having descriptions of what the tomes look like?

I believe this would require a redesc of every book in the game to have its title in the short description.

Either that, or a code solution (which you should never hold your breath for).

Good idea, impractical implementation.

I have read and written some complete wastes of time as far as books go; I voted "who cares," because I'd rather see books submitted to peer review before being added before fussing around with their short descriptions.

This would give heroes something to do other than hoard amulets.

As it stands, though, it is a bit annoying, I must agree. We can't even properly judge a book by its cover. :drunk:

I'd have to be with grep, but would like to point out that existing heroes seem to do diddly squat (when was the last hero tournament again?) so perhaps a small group of literary minded lifer players would be better than delegating such a task to the heroes.

And yeah, without an existing OOC knowledge of all the books, it is pretty insane to find the one you are searching for, although if I remember right, locate object can help with that. (will test this.)

I like the idea of being able to identify a book by its cover, however it's been mentioned that it would take a massive amount of work to implement.

Perhaps, instead, it would be possible to make some sort of "card catalog-esque" system. Maybe a scroll posted on the shelf, with the titles of each of the books. Heroes could TOTALLY be tasked with that.

Also, your poll options are garbage, so I refused to vote.

I mean, if you can't be relied on to look over three books a week while you've a hero, can you really be active enough to deserve the title?

As nebulous as getting a hero IN is, there should at least be definite ways to get a hero OUT.

Every other honorific in this game has automated contribution requirements. Even Gods have to log in consistently.

And there are a lot of books that could use some attention.

I say let these problems solve each other.

heroes aside, I am one of those weird people who makes it a point read every book I have come across and have a listing pretty much already set up. So if someone wants this done I can help with a card catalog.

Uh, not to be a huge dick, but how is "books read" a good criteria with which to evaluate players? It's cool that you guys enjoy them, and they certainly add a ton to the game, but how many books a character has read is far from the first thing I think about when I meet a new one. Rather, quality and consistency of character seems by far the most important.

In other news, sure, this would be cool, but re-descing every book as someone else noted would be quite the chore. If some players or an imm wants to do it, great, but don't annoint them for it.

erm...I don't think anyone suggested that how many books someone has read is a criteria for judging a character.

It is a part of my current character's concept that she read everything she comes across and that is partially because I enjoy it and partially because it adds to her. I would never think of the number of books someone has read to be a judge of quality. I mean Jesus there are about 40 books on Sadr in the game and they pretty much say the same thing and you can read all of them and still be a crappy sadrite (or whatever you wanna call sadr followers).

But there is a lot of history and neat things in some books that can really add to the overall concept of a character. I think a little info sheet like the one in cameroon's shop would be a nice addition to each room with bookshelves. And while I know a lot of the Imms are really busy right now, if something were already all drawn up it might not be too hard to implement.

Edit: Lol I am the dork he said player not character. eh well. point still stands as it is.
