As a side note, I believe that when charm is released from a NPC (whether they're released or charm is lost through attacking them or having them cancelled) that they remove and drop everything. This may have been intended, but it does happen.
Also, as someone has already mentioned, I believe that the reason you lose a charm when logging off is that you release all your spells beforehand.

A Lavish Hall
The upstairs hall is much akin to the entry hall in the aspect of
construction. The lower half of the walls are paneled, while the upper
portion is laid with a textured wallpaper. A thin maroon rug runs the
length of the hall, kept clean by the employees of this establishment.
Above each doorway has been hung the inn's emblem, a crescent moon, against
a pitch black backdrop.
