Spell failed.

What is the difference between the two? The spell is Word of recall.

If your PE is too low to cast recall, or if you are in a no-recall area, you will get the message "spell failed." If you fail at casting the spell, you will get the message "you failed."

28% each time, and yes I did have enough PE to recall anyways because I succeeded after and it brought me to 8%
Maybe I was on the edge of being able to do it.

Sounds like you may have passed just after a tick.

Makes sense, its the first time I have ever seen the message, I was just wondering what was up.

Same message you get if you're cursed, as well.

My secondary question to this is what does it mean when you cast a spell (no message appears) and nothing happens?

Is that failure or the spell being resisted? I was not in a 'no magic' area. And the spell is closed to being mastered and cast on myself.

What spell was it? A select few spells are "silent" and cause no message to appear when you cast the words: Among these are airy water and know alignment. The nice thing is that as a result you can cast airy water while drowning, but not word of recall, for example (You get a "Your mouth is full of water!" message).

That might be what's going on?

It was polymorph and change sex. Those have never been silent spells.
