The only time you need the much weaker golem pet up front instead of the elemental is when facing dispellers. And by then you should be close to if not more likely having chain lightning, a far more damaging spell and far more useful for training, and the golem still completely resists this.
The brief time that my warlock used this setup was about the least fruitfal he's been. Using earthquake with a golem up front = lousy leveling tool

You sir, are not fit to lick the dirt off my boots....It's actually the way I got 6-7 levels I believe using a golem pet with earthquake. I mean this won't affect me at all now.

Edit:
However, you did just screw over anyone leveling a warlock in the future.

You know what, it was a legitimate bug. It bugs me when people only report the bugs that affect them negatively and not positively. Zryych, let me know what character you are playing and I'll reward you a level for reporting it.

I think Zryych should get a level reward regardless for playing a warlock and sacrificing his time to find necessary tweaks.

Magic not affecting a golem. I'm not sure how this is a bug, but okay.

It's a spell that targets the ground. The victim takes damage from the non-magical aftereffects. Earthquake was spelled out in the change notes as being immune to magic resistance and magical protection for this reason.
