A beggar is blinded by the dirt in her eyes!
A beggar counters your attack!
A beggar's counterstrike maims you.
That really did HURT!
You lose your concentration on your song.
You stop singing.
A beggar looks alert again.

Thought that dirt kicking, tripping and the like didn't trigger counterstrike?

If you actually land the dirt kick at the start of a fight you get a round of attacks in before they can attack back.
So that was what was getting countered.

Shouldn't the NPC be flagged as fighting as soon as the dirt kick happens? I honestly would have played it off to the dirt kick causing damage because I see that from time to time, though the message is different.

Counterstrike is very buggy. There are other known issues, such as the mid-fight counterstrike when you kill someone and then maim the next poor shmuck to get a hit on you.

Isn't that a part of the new combat code though? I think the bugs involved in that are pretty exponential. Should just scrap it and go back to the old way.

No. It was an issue well before the new combat code.

Dirt kick does damage. Dirt kick is counterstrike-able.

Bash does damage. Bash is not counterstrike-able.
