Uh, RE + elemental + fireball = winning at leveling. Whether or not you are hitting yourself.

Looking at this some more, I can see the issue was NOT introduced by the new warlock package. In fact, I'm guessing it has been this way since November 2003, when the spell was fixed to not hit ethereal opponents.

Unless it was changed, resist elements does not negate the affects of warlock spells it merely acts as a damage reducing factor in leveling situations you cannot afford that.
Now, ever since that change I have found that chain lightning became a usable spell making air elementals a viable alternative. That is adding some divercity to the game other than the fire elemental magma spray combo. I think we'd all agree on more diverisity. Now I can understand an uncontrollable blast of flame like a firebal to hit the caster but chain lightning is a controlled arc of energy why would that turn back and hit the caster?

This whole thing is silly

Because it is chain lightning and leaps from person to person till it disipates, you are a person in that room.

At this point, I can take it or leave it. It appears to have been this way for almost 10 years without anyone complaining before (or even noticing). Is it overpowered? Doesn't seem to be.

Are you sure it isn't related to the fact when you used to cast something and your elemental would turn on you and you have put in a fix to stop that? You would cast and it would hit the elemental it would turn on you and put you in the chain?

Elementals were fixed to not turn on you probably almost as long ago.
