No, it doesn't make you a more skillful player, and I don't think anyone is arguing that. What it does is give you attainable goals instead of arbitrary ones. "Oh, my Wis is at 16 but my race max is 20. Maybe I want to find a few mods so I can be S-M-R-T!"

If you admit that numbers won't actually make a lick of difference on the playing field, so to speak, what is the problem with implementing them?

This, this, and this.

This is only hurting the MUD, really. Even if you think numbers are ugly, you could put them up in the helpfiles. This is the biggest gap that exists in the game for n00bs. As cheese_kk said, he probably wouldn't have stuck around without some OOC help. I know I probably wouldn't have either.

An experienced MUD player will still be able to build a decent character as long as he doesn't roll something like a giant warlock. As I recall, wasn't Aldric Baldric's first character?

I don't like this idea because A) I agree with Baldric and B) I want people to never have any reason IC to say "I have 25 dex!"

Aldric was my first character in any mud but I had seen people play the game when I was like 11.

Also, I was being sarcastic but can't tell if you understood that when you agreed with me.

Perfectly sums up what I think as well. The method of equipping more Wis until ME stops changing is really ineffective, even worse trying to gauge when Cha or Int are at max.

I did understand you were being sarcastic.

Honestly, I'm not sure why I am against the inclusion of numbers for stats given that I know what they are and are always thinking about them myself. Maybe it's because I don't think D will ever make a change like this.

Yeah, don't be silly. People already know when they have 25 dex, even if they don't use it IC. Just like the level-number implementation never changes people into saying "I am level 41", letting (newbie) players know their stats will not make the playerbase talking numbers either. It will only make the game more newbie-friendly. After all, this is a post-WoW era, people are USED to numbers so much, that it just doesn't make a game attractive to not have them, anymore.

The question isn't, "Do the playerbase and most of the imms want numbers?" They do.

The question is, "Does Dulrik care?"

I am sure he cares. It is just a big decision and big decisions are hard to take.
The only thing that makes it easier are the latest number additions to status. I think everyone enjoyed this.

I think we should give it a go...

I also agree that the exclusion of numbers in favor of adjective descriptors, while handy for quick conversion of ooc info into a form that can be communicated IC easily, really only hurts the noobies who aren't yet capable of the conversion from 'greater enchantment' to "Enchantment strength: [4,infinity)"

All the 'long-tooth' players know how to convert to the numbers behind the words, and those who are ACTUALLY new to pyrathia are going to need all the conversions explained OOC, not to mention that they usually need another player to give them a walkthrough and explain to them that they can't be named "Daemonhawk", and that any out of character information needs to be prefaced with "OOC". It makes sense to make the information available to all, since we only encourage elitism and discourage noobies by making it a case of "you're either in the know, or you aren't"

I wholeheartedly agree that we would do well to hide this information behind an 'auto' option with.

If you name yourself 'Daemonhawk', you have managed to fail at reading, since that would be prohibited by the creation questions. It's amazing how many people DO manage to fail at reading though, considering this is a text game.

Newbs get tolerance for doing it....players who have been around for awhile...less of an excuse...

Is it really our place to go up to a new character, "Oh hey...hi welcome....just so you know, that name is not acceptable and you risk losing all work you put into it when staff sees the name?"
