That SK has no such global channels is a point of pride for this MUD. D has specifically created the mentor system to cut back as much as possible on straight OOC help. It's still necessary from time to time to go OOC, but most things can and should be relayed IC.

If there was an OOC newbie channel, I bet most players, even those who currently use the mentor system, would have it turned off.

I agree completely - even if I didn't, it's still Dulrik's decision and he has and always will be against global OOC channels on the MUD.

That is fine, I am only relaying my experiences around needing "help".

To be sure, as I've noted earlier, I had a great deal of fortune with proferred help from people in Character, dumping gold and items my way, I still don't even know where half of those things came from in game. Not to mention the roleplay that I did appreciate being able to be a part of.

That said, the things that I've needed help with are OOC issues. Some of which I was able to resolve from help files, some of which from reading forum posts, and some from players who noted things to me OOCly.

I am not sure why everyone feels the need to convince each other on these forums, I am merely stating my opinions here. My instinct is to minimize the IC information transmitted via the who list.

That does not mean I am right, or that others need to listen to my opinion.

I am noting my opinion that the majority of help a new player needs is actualy OOC help, syntax, and understanding of game systems. That's fine too.

I actually like there being no OOC channels in a RP game, but I still admit that the majority of help required by a new player is OOC, and that if you were truly trying to provide help for a new player you would have a means to address the core of their needs. (You do of course through the forums, help files etc., but we're talking about helping newbies as a player right now).

I'm quite sure that most mentors have broken IC channels to give OOC advice before to a newbie. I would be surprised if there are those who claim otherwise.

Since the only OOC help you reference in your post are helpfiles and the forums, I'm going to have to assume that you skipped the newbie tutorial in your starting kingdom.

They are very extensive and designed to help new players.

Don't take offense, Aelandron. People just want to "win" at SK forums.

Actually, Dulrik, I think any pushback he's getting in this thread is more people just coming together to get behind a superb idea aimed at helping genuinely new players connect with those characters who can best set them up to enjoy the game.

You might not recognize that, though, because it happens so very rarely.

We feel the need to convince each other on the forums because if the only thing that is done is statements of opinions and no one states which is better, how will the coders know which opinion to put into the game?

"He likes this. She likes that. Okay, we're done." That gets nothing solved.

"He likes this. She likes that. Most people are convinced that hers is better. It gets put into the game." Now we're talking.

Call it winning the forums, but convincing people that your idea is better matters, and gets things done.

It was a tongue in cheek post. I thought that would be obvious with the wink.

The veterans have already pointed out that "no global channels" is a feature of SK. In fact, we advertise that (or we have in the past). That is not going to change. I can live with the idea of colored title for "New to Pyrathia" title and will probably implement that unless the tide turns against it.
