But barbarians should not enjoy spell and weapon immunity.

We should not be able to cast dispel on a non-ethereal target while we are ethereal. That is way overpowered. Dispel is already one of the better spells in the game. We should not be able to use it with utter impunity.

Why should dispel work from the ethereal plane when other spells don't?

Persuade "works" while ethereal. (or at least it did back when I played a bard. That might have changed by now)

Dispel from an ethereal sorc should only affect other ethereal form characters. Dispel from a physical-plane sorc should only affect those on the physical plane.

That is the only logical alternative to the way it works now. And if you say physical-plane sorcs should be able to dispel ethereal sorcs, then stop talking. For the physical to be able to affect the ethereal and not the other way around is dumb. That's why, currently, it's set to affect everyone no matter what plane you're on.

Okay, you don't want ethereal people to be able to dispel non-ethereal people. Do you want non-ethereal people to be able to dispel ethereal people?

Exactly what rodwen said. Either dispel works both ways or it doesn't. As for the theorycrafting I have seen Wudan beat GM mercs in 1v1 duels more than once. Are we talking about some greatsword wielding rogue? He will probably still go down. Besides, reciting and having FZ is mutually exclusive for all races except delfs.
