Nonsense. A fully trained MR griffon hammer barbarian is going to win pretty much all of his fights. He'll also spend no time or energy doing prep work, meaning that when he does die, it doesn't matter. They'll also be immensely useful for pve. And for a newb, it's probably the easiest thing to level.

Yes, but how much do you learn about the game by playing that combination?

We have to ask if the intention is to be able to win fights or if it is to learn about the game.

My goto for anyone new has been griffon/scout. They can move a lot, see in the dark, get a tanking pet. Learn many of the necessary commands at the same time "o xxx yyy."

Depends. You will see plenty of PvP and PvE. Learn basic mechanics and areas. Can RP as much as anybody else. You just won't have to use skill or expend energy in order to level up or experience moderate success. I think it's a great choice for a first character.

That's a good point. Assuming you have someone holding your hand, since pretty much every newbie does, that's not a bad sentiment at all.

I'm fairly sure even Seraphyla or whoever was being shown the ropes by someone?

There wasn't any one person who showed me the ropes, but I had a LOT of mentors here and there for Serakyla. It helped that I had read basically the entire help section and most of the forum before I started her. Thanks again for everyone who pitched in =)

I do agree with you that there is limit on how much you can learn playing this combo. I think that you will still get a solid enough foundation with it, though, and the benefits will greatly outweigh the drawbacks of it as a first character. Something with locate object and gate would certainly provide a more in-depth introduction to SK.

To learn about sk. A heavy armor priest class is absolutely the best. Survivability as a newb - I think griffbarb is spot on.

Yeah, Baldric is right in that a griffon MR hammarb is definitely the "easiest" choice for a new character. I was more thinking along the lines of learning important mechanics like detecting hidden doors, invisible NPCs, keeping track of consumables, but yet still being reasonably strong naked, which all barbarians have a knack for doing. I just feel like playing a griffon would give you the wrong impression of a lot of the specifics as far as gear is concerned in SK, and a newbie would probably have a hard time adjusting to playing a humanoid character afterwards.

That said, griffon MR Hammarb would definitely be the most fun though, and would certainly give the most bang for a newbie's buck as far as usefulness goes even in the highest levels of PvE and PvP. I just guess I'm still annoyed at the idea in general though, because it was when Dulrik added Aura of Negation that I realized that SK will never be anywhere close to a balanced game, which honestly takes a lot of the fun out of it for me.
