A question: If I am using a Self Defense weapon, like Brass Knuckles, does brawling still work, and the reverse as well; if I am using a brawling weapon, say Spiked Knuckles, will I also continue to use Self Defense?

I should guess that you use the skill of what you're using in terms of rolling rolls.

But any passive benefits which come with, or indeed active checks for extra attacks, would come from wherever they come from.

That's my total guess. Brawling and such are "packages" that come with more benefits than, say, the "sword" skill.

This is actually an interesting question for several reasons. If you want to find out the answer, take a guy who knows both brawling and self-defense to a less than mastered level and use some brawling knuckles. Wear the knuckles and go fight stuff. If you still get self-defense skill improvements, then my guess is you are still also using the self-defense skill in some capacity while brawling with knuckles on. If not, you aren't.

I don't remember, exactly, but it seems that I had to use knuckles after brawling when the brawling skill mastered before self defense did. I don't recall if I got betters in self defense at the same time, but I think it was all brawling. It could be I got these two reversed. It has been about four years since I bothered with either skill.

While using a self-defense weapon my brawling still improved, and I'm still getting the second attack, so i guess that answers it.

I'll confirm what Travorn said. I was using the new boot weapons (which are effectively, according to the game, knuckles), and reading help brawling will show you that upon learning that skill you will then be able to use knuckles. Using the weapon only increases brawling, as well. I skimmed through some of my training logs and I only ever got better at self defense when I didn't have any weapons in my hands.

I've improved at both while using a SD weapon.

Hm.. Maybe my char was just a fluke then? I dunno. I'll experiment more sometime. It could be that, since foot weapons aren't in use except during a kick, they just weren't in constant enough use to give me any improvement in self defense the way hand weapons might have through their constant use in battle.

All I know is that, from my own personal experience, I've never improved at self defense with any knuckle weapons. Just brawling. :/
