Exactly. Some people don't even know certain items in the game exist simply because they've never even been able to locate them. This would at least give people a chance to know certain things exist.

That's stupid, archaicsmurf. The only people who have any real motivation to oppose this idea are people with storage characters. What's wrong with locaters knowing what's where, even if its offline? If anything it'll stir up more conflict which is always a good thing, with characters contracting loot motivated hits out on offline characters that they never see.

If all the hoarders are pissed that they'll be called out, why not just go with a 'on an unidentifiable plane' to at least tell the one locating that 'someone has it.'

Even though I think it would be much better if it said which character has the object.

ex: locate 'sword of a thousand truths.'; Sword of a thousand truths is held by 'hoarderPwnage6969';
you tell 'mercenaryVet' "I'll pay you 40 black if you kill this man and obtain the sword of a thousand truths because you're super active and you'll see this person log before I will."
mercVet replies "it will be done."

... Added RP benefit. Argue that, if you must.

Right, I mean, that's exactly what I said. Except without the stupid "on an unidentifiable plane" part, which clearly wouldn't change anything compared to how things are now. And it really isn't just to stop hoarding, because it obviously won't do that. It's more just to have greater transparency about who has what, which is definitely a good thing on a game with relatively small playerbase.

The same way enchanting got parsed out into multiple spells may also benefit object-based spells for various purposes.

Offline item locations in the same spell would put a strain on the suspension of disbelief for the boundaries between IC and OOC knowledge as well as between NPCs and PCs.

It would spawn a lot of vigilantism where there's probably already more than is needed.

Can objects record who owned them and when via magic? Can we learn where an object came from if we have it in our inventories via lore? There are so many more interesting potential directions to develop locate object than "every single piece of mithril I just located was offline."

From Grep's argument, I feel it is safe to assume that he's a hoarder. ...Only jokes. but I dont see how this would mess with the belief between ooc and ic.
"Someone is using all of their mental energy to protect the location of the sword of a thousand truths."
That allows you to stay anonymous and the locator to know its offline.
But knowing who has it is still good for business in my eyes.
Vigilantes are a bad thing in SK, you say? How many people choose the title 'mercenary for hire?' And how many of them actually get paid/called upon to hunt someone down. Assassins will be a more heavily recruited player type. It will allow people to make bigger goals than 'take the relic. kill the enemy.'
SK needs this for noobs and vets alike. The only people who don't like it are hoarders. And its not like having the information will make hoarders less likely to hoard. If people aren't tattletales and leave ic stuff ic, (ppl dont get imms involved) then it will evolve the game in a good way. But, if people tell the imms, you should have been more dedicated and active in the first place, so suck it.

On the topic of a Lore update, I think thats pretty awesome. "The sword was forged by originalNpc. It was 'pried from their hands by' firstOwnerPc. It was 'given to' secondOwnerPC.
This story goes on and on until it is junked.
Also, enchanters should get a new spell to remove their name from lore, for they did not wield it, and can keep their name in the clear. (thisEnchanter aided THAT mo fo?!) It would allow a cool history. If we wanted lore to be even more detailed, It would be cool to see a list of people that the sword has landed the final blow on. (PC's only)

But yeah. Locate object. its awesome, don't deny it.

This is not the fix for hoarding.
