How did you obtain the item? As for the bard lore, that's exactly what I mean when I talk about going through the motions. Did someone give you the item? Did you 'explore' to get it? For someone who has played as long as you have, any exploration into places you have already been is going through the motions because you already know the area and are just being courteous by quickly sweeping it again.

I looted the item from another character's corpse. If you consider interacting with other characters (like a bard) as going through motions, why are you playing SK again?

While I am not trying to be rude, you did tell me people aren't going to play the game the way I do, and what I am reading from you is that you expect people to play the game the way you do. This goes back to my point that we are all playing a different game in the same world.

You are conflating the way I play the game with the rules established by Dulrik.

I play the game in a way that conforms with the rules. If you want to transfer information between characters, it is not an issue of "not playing the game my way" - you are not playing the game legitimately or the way Dulrik intends it to be played.

The problem is I don't really know how Dulrik wants his game played.

As far as rules violation, I have yet to see anyone punished for it. I am honestly not sure what half the rules are for or how they will be enforced.

With the added note of transferring knowledge from one character to another, you would need to forget all you know about cabals, information outside your home kingdom, what equipment you need and where to obtain it, areas to level, trainers, etc. This would mean devoting large portions of your time to pretending to relearn all these things IC, finding people to show you things IC, pretend to wander about and find things IC. When I am playing with 8 other people for four hours a day, I don't have the patience for it.

Depending on how you came by the item, I would consider it going through the motions. The way you got it, looting another player, would be one way I would look at it in a different light. However, if you used previous knowledge to get it, I would certainly call that going through the motions.

This should help then:

Rules 1, Rules 2, Roleplaying

I read those.

Without ragging on the game too much, they need to be clearly defined and enforced.

I agree that Dulrik does not want game info shared OOC, but he asked for suggestions in this thread and I continue to believe that there is a segment of the gameplaying population that will enjoy SK more with the ability to read OOC strategy guides, which would require a change of policy on Dulrik's part.

There was once an IC book that gave pretty good details about enchanting, and there is an IC book detailing how to do the pilgrimage. It might not be that hard to imagine that there could be IC books that describe how to navigate the more difficult areas in the game. We could read a description online (which is infinitely more readable than in-game books) and then roleplay as navigating by a book (think raiders of the lost ark).

If Dulrik is kosher with allowing a fan site or wiki with game information, I will definitely contribute.

If this happens, you have my gratitude for contributing.

I really hope that never happens.

Why?

[GOSSIP] sup ya'll - how do I get to the outpost?

[GOSSIP] hey, any sorcs or priests that can enchant a sick dagger for me? thx!

That is why I never want to see a global channel on SK. The amount of useless crap-o-la I see on tribunal and cabal channels discussing game mechanics, equipment, leveling and pretty much everything and anything but RP is disturbing enough.

If Dulrik decides to go this route, I hope he has at least one staff member to police that channel at all times.

You've identified the real and secret reason why in-game global chat channels are such a good idea. Right now the exact dialog you typed up can and does happen on instant messengers outside of the game.

People like to talk about the features of the game they play. If you encourage in-character discussion of in-game mechanics, perhaps it would result in a rewarding and educational experience.

I don't see why an opt-in model where hipsters like yourself could choose not to view the channel(s) would be so disturbing.

You've heard things through the grapevine that undoubtedly make you more receptive. :drunk:

Although I've been scanning responses, I wanted to avoid responding too quickly because I didn't want to halt the flow of potentially new ideas. Now that things appear to be slowing down and settling into some patterns (and arguments), let me summarize what I've seen and clarify my stance on them.

Dulrik Response Key:
???? - I don't know how or don't have the ability to make this happen
NO - Will never happen (usually contradicts SK's design goals)
MEH - Perhaps someday but not enough impact to merit discussion here
MAYBE - I might do this someday if I'm convinced further
SURE - I plan to do this someday, but not sure when
YES - This sounds like it could be a huge help

New Mechanics:
Multiclassing - NO
Heroes - SURE
Ways to communicate your RP: Gamer archtype, journals - MAYBE
Tradeskills (forging, dyeing, mining, etc) - SURE
More use for loyalty tokens - MAYBE
NewGame+ - NO
Altitude changes - MEH

Balancing Mechanics:
Reduce effectiveness of spell items (wands, staves, potions) - MAYBE
Make the game less difficult/more casual - MAYBE
Balance melee and spell damage better - MAYBE
Fix "exploits": Ethereal dispel - SURE
Fix "exploits": AoN - MAYBE

Change Mechanics:
Fewer levels - NO
Cheaper move for lowbies - MAYBE
Eliminate penalties of aging - NO
Change CRS: No ability removal - MEH / MAYBE

Updated Content:
"End Game" content - MAYBE / ????
Update existing armor for new enchant system - SURE
Change the pantheon - MEH / NO
Revamp quests for transparency - SURE

Updated Policies:
Remove static alignments - NO
Global channels - NO
More regulation: PK - ????
More regulation: Hoarding - SURE
One character per player (enforced) - ???? / NO
Easier to get loyalty tokens - NO
Official information sharing (Wiki) - MAYBE
More OOC communication: Imms - ????
More OOC communication: Players - ????

Players Attitudes:
Less team mentality - ????
More role playing - ????
More newbie friendliness - ????
Less cheating - ????

Other:
Native clients for Facebook - YES
Native clients for Mobile - SURE
Existing channels compatible with other chat clients - MAYBE
Email notifications for in-game events (such as CRS) - SURE
Pwipe - MEH / NO

If you want to know why I feel a certain way about one of these, feel free to ask. A lot are probably obvious and I don't want to waste time on answers that everyone thinks they already know. But if you don't, make a request and I'll dive into specifics.

Based on this list, I encourage people to keep discussing further to elaborate on ideas or add more new ones. Then in a few more days I'll do some sort of poll.
