Oh I thought you meant like facebook friends voting for you or something.

Yeah it probably should come down to a vote from the player-base.

In Joseph Campbell's acclaimed The Hero with a Thousand Faces, an examination of many different myths and traditions lead to development of the "monomyth" and a generic, heroic cycle applicable to most of our heroic stories. In the monomyth, one of the first few phases of the hero's journey is "refusal of the call." Naturally, the hero accepts the call and then receives "supernatural aid."

I was interested in the impression that heroes were not, in fact, on any heroic path already as defined by one of the modern era's most prominent sets of tropes. I don't think it's an odd expectation at all from a storytelling standpoint.

It also might not be odd to bring up from a procedural standpoint. What happens if none of the heroes are interested in the RP? The potential for having over-reached with heroes is non-zero.

But I admit my questions are mostly framed in the context of going off of lots of external sources owing to the lack of information. As more is revealed, I'm sure we'll all come to understand it better.

Okay, I can see what you are saying, although I'm not familiar with the source. I don't have an answer for you now though. And frankly, will have to think about what the answer should be.

No problem. Joseph Campbell is pretty cool. While there are legitimate criticisms of his work from the anthropological standpoint of washing away significant individual differences in cultures, it remains true that his work set a lot of standards. One of his students was a pretty prominent writer and wrote a screenplay based on the hero cycle. I'm sure you've seen Star Wars: Lucas studied under Campbell. You can follow the cycle pretty much through the entire saga. It's like watching.. what was it, the Wizard of Oz while listening to Metallica?

ITT: People pretend that they have never played SK before and that everything is always fully prepared and explainable.

Achernar, I see you lurking this thread and if you're allowed, I'd appreciate you weighing in. As the organizer of the majority of hero events in the past, and the overseer of so many hero tournaments that I can't even count them all, your input that these heroes were selected based on genuinely heroic aspects would go a long way to mollifying my concerns.

That's an impossibility, since they're all bound by the commenting privileges granted by Dulrik. I'm just looking for the input of someone who had an extremely strong grasp of what constitutes a hero in SK, and who has previously codified a system to determine the same. Weren't you the one that, in another forum, recently said that speaking from experience is valid?

OA you should stop hating on Galeihn. He has displayed 10 times the heroship than all of your characters combined. You should respect that, and accept it. Maybe next time you will get hero, okay buddy? It will be alright.

I'm here to comment on and question the selection system as a whole, not call out specific characters who are flagged. The most I will say about who my objections relate to is that they're currently flagged. Which ones will be a matter not discussed in open forum.

Keep on truckin' though, dude. Someday you'll make someone cry, I'm sure. Just won't be me.

Yes, I was. I think we're on the same page, or at least in the same chapter, when it comes to the way we've been shown the new heroes system. However... after Dulrik's posts giving clear direction on what we're supposed to be expecting... well:

Quote:
And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the six beasts saying, Come and see.

Why ask Achernar to give spoilers? Why can't this be handled ICly after a certain point?

I'm not asking Achernar to give specifics. I'm asking him to offer assurance that the current heroes are actually, by definition, heroic. Nothing more specific than that. That should be allowed.

EDIT: It also can't be handled IC because a fair number of those selected really don't qualify IC as actually heroic, as I addressed in my earlier posts.
