Shattered Kingdoms

I hope this doesn't come off as condescending, since I do appreciate the time and effort the staff puts into bonanzas. After voting for Shattered Kingdoms on TMS, I decided to take a look at the sites for the top five games. Two observations:

- Their websites immediately and prominently display news about current or planned events. You don't have to sift through their site or read multiple forums to find out about promotional or RP events that might lure players to join their community.

- Three of the five games are either currently running or recently offered the following promotions: double experience weekends for an entire month, purchasable gear (with currency similar to loyalty) that increases gold drops, health/mana regeneration and experience from killing monsters, or bonus experience for difficult or rare monsters.

Seems like what the "big dogs" do is always have some sort of promotional, bonanza-type event running and they do an excellent job of making sure that is the very first thing you see when you visit their website to lure in players.

I decided to replicate Finney's experiment. I noticed playercounts rather than web designs.

For SK, TMC rank is 772. "Minimum players" is 25-49.
For SK, TMS rank is 20. "Avg players online" is 26-35.

My observation: I have taken a log of a character and searched for every typing of the "who" command. I have then taken the "Players found:" argument after it. This resulted in 2254 player counts. Two-thirds of values were between the ranges of 12 and 24. The average was 18. If someone asked me about the numbers on these mud sites, I would have to say that the numbers on these websites are false based on the information I have available.

We would have an easier time recruiting people if the real playcounts were more transparent and accessible than what we have available to us right now.
