Even if you are RPing a mercenary, SK does feature a class called Mercenary. Never shall the two intertwine, friends.

So what is the best armor type for the light armor? How do I train in heavier armor?

Light armor early on will be scale, bronze, brass.
Later you will want Mithril. Energy (cloth type technically), is better armor, but takes less to penetrate. Dragonscale is good as well.

And indeed, as many others have mentioned check the help armor2 file.
Sadly your armor type is locked by class, to change what armor you can effectively use, you would have to recreate as a different class.

Dragonscale is the best armor in the game when paired with magical vestments in terms of AC value. atleast it used to be.
unfortunately there is also no decent high tier dragonscale armor with good innates.

Dragonscale got implemented but never really used by imms when revamping areas.
*hinthint* (if any imms are taking note ;p )

Ps. If there has been more dragonscale added in the last few months, I still have yet to see it.

My understanding of the current enchant system is that you basically need armor that starts with SAVES to build a suit. Innate willpower, fortitude, or reflex (but mostly wp and fort). You can always just enchant for AP.

I'd say that you want to start with saves to build a GOOD suit. Having maxed stats certainly helps, but only so much.

Without armor/jewelry with innate saves, you're going to be getting consistently petrified/put to sleep/feared/dispelled/whatever else anyone wants to do to you. A maxed stat + 5 enchants to whatever save you want is only going to do so much against a max art sorc.

Especially when you save against something, it lowers the max save value for that stat. And when a sorc runs and and recites two double petrification scrolls back to back... Strike a pose.
