The area list in game, is that considered IC? When I was leveling I approached it as, I heard of a place called "Blah Blah Blah", might you know where I can find it?

Or would I technically not even know the name?

Also leveling spots, most of them I had NO CLUE where they were until someone showed me.

Do most of you play that with new characters by asking around?

Or are cities, villages, and areas considered common knowledge around the lands.

I'm not talking about the special areas that need keywords, quest, or are in crazy remote locations, I'm talking more of the common ones located not far off the roads, near cities, within cities, and such.

Playing completely nub sucks at my late/early play time. The other night there was only me and one other person on. :-(

I have been playing that I know of the kingdoms, and of some of the areas that are near the roads, figuring my character would run into them just by walking from kingdom to kingdom. Just wanted to get others opinions to make sure I'm not walking any lines.

Good question. I'd take the area command to be similar to the who list in nature. IC by way of rumor or "common knowledge". I have a slightly off topic and probably the wrong forum comment, but I'll put it here anyway. Did anybody else ever notice that once you've gone past an area's level range you can no longer see it in your area list? I find this completely counter-productive. The area command has the coordinates on it now so its easier to help newbies explore. Maybe there should be a way to access the area listts that are below your level.

Agreed. My suggestion is to modify every command except the standard "area" to show all places. For example, "area <kingdom>" would show all the areas in the kingdom up to my level.

I definitely see the information that area gives as IC in nature. Spin how you like, just the same with any help file.

I have definately noticed that about the area list, and it annoys me to all ends. Sometimes there will be places I've visited that I want to go back to, but because its now out of my level its no longer showed. I think it would be great if there was an option such as "area known" or something that will show all areas that you have travelled to with their sextant co-ordinates.

Back on topic..
I have personally always had to use some OOC knowledge with my characters while trying to train using the excuse that its just a rumor the character heard or maybe went exploring and "somehow" managed to find it.

Its the only time I'll admit to OOC knowledge because really 90% of the time you have to if you want to get anywhere levelling :(

I take it as most characters have learned through word of mouth (from peers/parents/elders) about places and where they are and such but your "adventures" to such places have not yet begun. Upon chosing a profession, you suddenly have goals and you use areas that you've heard about to fufill those goals.

If you think about it, elves/drows start out at age 101... you going to try and tell me they havent heard stories of the world in their century+1 lifespan?

I'll agree with archaic on this one. Plenty of stories about places. What they are, where they are. I'll stop short on 'how to get to tom' or whatnot.

There is absolutely no reason in the entire world that any player who hasn't been to the ToM or given directions as their current character should know how to. Pulling that "Oh, my father was an adventurer" excuse is complete bull and is a curseable/deleteable offense.

I still can't find my way to ToM.

Then again who needs ToM? SK is full of sick levelling areas on the main continent that you can solo plvl to GM within 40 hours or so.

I tend to play the area list as something my character learned in a basic geography class. She learned how to read, write, and speak her native language, so it stands to reason that somehow in her education (however formal or informal) she learned some basic locations in Pyrathia. She may or may not know how to get there, but for most places at least she knows they exist and what kingdom they're in.
