Just doing a little forum trolling but I found this "mode stun" idea worthy of a response.

Mode stun has a few mechanical issues in PvP. In mode stun, you tend to do less damage per round, or appear to do less damage per round. Also, certain tactics in mode stun are useless, such as hacking off arms, since they don't get hacked off. Now, you could try to time a "switch to stun" to coincide with the last round, but then you either neglect other commands to time it or you risk being skill-lagged or you risk being bash/trip-lagged.

Mode stun has far too many draw-backs to be used in true tactical PvP.

Pushing40 has the problem hit on the proverbial nail head so to speak. Mode stun is so detrimental in combat that it's not even funny. Mode kill > mode stun because you will 90% of the time lose to a person set to kill.

While I agree that SOME realism is required, this is a fantasy game. In my opinion, make mode stun on par with mode kill. This might not solve the problem then again people can play the game WITHOUT having to kill their enemies. Right now, the only time I ever see mode stun used is when it was Syn's shaman OR if the player is just way highe than the other.

You have the inequalities wrong.

If you have loot, you will be pked for the loot and they will leave w/o rp.

If you look funny, you will be pked just for looking funny and that is what they claim is rp.

Over 95% of all pks recently is rpless.

First off, I read and appreciate Dayamin's essay of opinion. And even though there is a lot of animosity, archaicsmurf seems to have valid opinions as well. I could be wrong, but it seems to me that there are two camps of people talking past each other here.

Dayamin doesn't want there to be RP-less PK. Archaicsmurf doesn't want PK restrictions. Personally, I agree with both of those goals. Unfortunately, I don't know of any real solutions. By all means report a PK if you feel you have been PK'd without RP, but most situations I have dealt with are rarely so straightforward.

In the meantime, there is the new code for theft from bodies. I also need to make a few additions so that destruction of a body or picking up the body also counts as theft.

It just needs to be coded so that a pc can use non-lethal force but still actually break a limb.

That and once a vital body part is at 0 hp that the character is considered stunned instead of the entire hp pool. That way someone can deliver a vicious blow to your head and knock you out. Kind of like when a boxer delivers a sweet punch to the chin and the other boxer folds.

That would mean that you could actually use mode stun in PK. It would be great for people like the pacifistic kind of fists.

*likes Ardith's idea*

I think what the really problem is that there are two sets of people: One who believe that a war between factions is enough RP for PK. The other group feels that their needs to be RP person to person in order for some PK to take place.

I have never been a fan of deep-elves killing elves on sight but there are some people that believe that is enough RP to warrant PK. I think that there needs to be some ground rules for PK in general set down from the Imms and D. But rules must be enforced by the Imms. I think that would be a good step toward this problem.

I am sorry to slightly derail this thread, but here is an option for stun. Let stun break bones, but keep from severing limbs? And let people who have broken bones in their arms drop their weapon and shields, and broken legs will keep them from bashing and tripping. No way is anyone with a broken bone able to continue to wield his heavy arse sword or shield.
